Under Mythos follows a lone cat wandering into an unfamiliar world in search of its mother, where it discovers a mysterious hot spring inn. The protagonist works at the facility to serve unusual guests while the surrounding environment gradually descends into cosmic horror and madness.

Yoichi Miyaji, the former president of Game Arts and producer of the Grandia series, founded KADATH to develop this project. The studio describes the narrative arc as a stark contrast between a peaceful, healing daily routine and a bizarre, unpredictable reality.

Character designer Atsuko Nishida directly adapted elements of the Cthulhu Mythos for the game. Nishida interpreted the chaos god Nyarlathotep as a small, cat-like entity to accompany the player.


Gameplay Loop: Hot Spring Management Meets Extraction

KADATH designed a gameplay loop that forces players to balance cozy hospitality with high-stakes resource gathering. The peaceful everyday life inside the inn serves as a central hub, while the outside world contains dangerous extraction zones.

Players venture into hostile dungeons to collect food ingredients and resources required to serve the inn’s guests. These dungeon segments feature 2D action-based combat against grotesque beings. The developer implemented extraction elements, meaning players must survive and return safely to secure their gathered materials.

Once back at the inn, players invest their resources into facility upgrades. Expanding the hot spring attracts new mythical customers and unlocks deeper exploration paths. Producer Yoichi Miyaji stated that the team wants to merge the extremes of comfort and madness into a hybrid experience.

Who is Developing Under Mythos?

KADATH assembled a team of renowned Japanese developers for the project. The roster includes producer Yoichi Miyaji (Lunar, Grandia), character designer Atsuko Nishida (Pokémon), scenario writer Takumi Miyajima (Tales of the Abyss), and composer Noriyuki Iwadare (Ace Attorney, Lunar).

According to the official Steam Devlog, the studio is actively preparing a vertical slice of the game. The team wants to establish the core mechanics, audio, and visual direction before expanding production.

Composer Noriyuki Iwadare noted that the game’s soundtrack directly reflects the protagonist’s descent into madness. The audio transitions from traditional Japanese-inspired music into fast-paced jazz as the environment becomes unstable.

KADATH plans to release Under Mythos in 2028 for PC via Steam and the Nintendo Switch. The development team is currently seeking collaboration partners to fund and support the project’s future development phases.
