Key Takeaways
  • Level-5 officially delayed the crime suspense RPG Decapolice from 2026 to 2027.
  • The publisher confirmed the game will launch on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
  • A playable public demo will be available at the Tokyo Game Show from September 17 to September 21, 2026.

The Development Timeline

Level-5 announced another major release window shift for the highly anticipated detective RPG Decapolice. The publisher confirmed the title will now launch in 2027 across modern consoles and PC.

The development studio originally planned to release the game in 2023. Level-5 subsequently pushed the launch to 2024, then 2026, and finally settled on the newly announced 2027 window, as shared during the recent LEVEL-5 VISION 2026 II

Why Did Level-5 Delay Decapolice to 2027?

Level-5 delayed Decapolice to finalize complex puzzle mechanics and ensure a seamless blend of virtual investigation and turn-based combat. The development team requires additional time to integrate intricate crime scene concepts designed alongside escape room creators SCRAP.

Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino addressed the extended development cycle during the LEVEL-5 Vision 2026 II Dream broadcast. Hino explained the project features twists and mechanics completely distinct from the established Professor Layton franchise.

The executive confirmed the studio partnered with SCRAP to build authentic mystery elements, including the showcased Three Mafioso Murders case. Hino stated the development team prioritizes a unique gameplay experience over a rushed launch schedule.

How the Decasim Virtual World Functions

Decapolice centers on Harvard Marks, an ambitious rookie detective leading the Special Investigations Unit in Broadstone. Players utilize a perfect virtual recreation of the city called Decasim to investigate dormant memories of past crimes.

Players inspect virtual crime scenes, collect evidence, and organize clues on a dedicated Case Board. The protagonist then profiles suspects and presents deductions to crack the case in the real world.

Suspects confronted with irrefutable evidence can surrender through careful negotiation tactics led by squad member Carl Oxford. Cornered criminals can also transform into malicious entities called Crime Beasts, forcing players into tactical turn-based combat.

Playable Demo Arrives at Tokyo Game Show 2026

Despite the 2027 release date, Level-5 confirmed Decapolice will feature a playable public demo soon. Attendees can test the investigative mechanics at the Tokyo Game Show 2026.

The convention runs from September 17 to September 21 at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. The presence of a hands-on build suggests the core gameplay loop is fully operational.

Level-5 promises to share more details regarding the official Decapolice development in the coming months. The studio continues to refine the experience ahead of its final console and PC debut.
