The Last of Us Season 3 Will Follow New Main Character

The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann has confirmed Season 3 will follow a new protagonist during an Emmy FYC panel. Season 2 is only just over, but HBO and Naughty Dog are already looking forward as they reveal early details.

The Last of Us Season 3 Will Follow New Main Character

The Last of Us Season 3 will follow two critically acclaimed seasons led by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who play Joel and Ellie in the show. Co-creator Neil Druckmann has revealed a new protagonist will lead the show into the new season.

At the end of Season 2, the show experienced a shift in perspective, which will continue into Season 3. Druckmann confirmed during an Emmy FYC panel that Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, will be the main character in this new season.

Who Is the New Character?

Abby was introduced to us as the antagonist in Season 2 of The Last of Us, serving as the driving force for Ellie’s personal revenge story after she kills Joel at the end of episode 2.

Speaking about her role, Dever told the panel, and reported by Variety, that she feels at home in the show, stating: “It was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had as an actor, just because it really, really felt like such a team effort.”

Why the Shift in Focus?

In a show where anyone can die, and real danger for every character is only moments away, the ever-changing shift in perspective allows the show to explore different emotions, something co-creator Craig Mazin explains: “In a show where we try and keep things as grounded as possible, and we want people to feel in real danger, then yes, sometimes the people that we can’t imagine dying die.”

While the show will look to share Abby’s story and continue to explore emotional themes, Druckmann and Mazin have told fans to expect a less chaotic Season 3. Speaking on the panel, Druckmann stated it will be “more of a water season than a fire season,” and they won’t “light things on fire.”

What This Means for the Series

Season 3 will introduce new factions and delve further into the series’ moral complexity with a new protagonist who holds her own ideals. Will Ellie return in The Last of Us Season 3? Ellie will more than likely feature sporadically throughout, but with a new character leading the series, her role in the show will be less than fans were expecting.

There is no release date set for The Last of Us Season 3. With two years separating Season 1 and Season 2, we could have to wait until 2027 at the earliest for the third season.

Conclusion

The Last of Us Season 3 will feature Abby as the main character, taking over from Season 2’s protagonist, Ellie. Do you think Abby is a good choice for this role? Share your thoughts in the comments.
