The Last of Us Part 2: Unused Gameplay Features Revealed

Ellie utilizing stealth tactics in The Last of Us Part II

Think you’ve uncovered every secret in The Last of Us Part II? Think again. Even five years after its original release, Naughty Dog’s masterpiece is still hiding surprises, and a massive one just surfaced from the game’s code.

With the HBO series ramping up hype for Season 3 and the PC version debuted in April 2025, renewed interest has led to deep data mining. Modder Speclizer has cracked open the files, revealing that Ellie was originally supposed to have a far more complex combat arsenal than what we got in the final cut.

The Last of Us Part II’s Cut Mechanic

If you played the Remastered version last year, you likely saw the “Lost Levels” and their unfinished animations. But Speclizer’s discovery goes deeper. Buried in the PC code is a fully functional mechanic called “Hold Up.”

This wasn’t just a glitch. It was a fleshed-out system designed to let players sneak up on enemies and take them hostage. Unlike the quick stealth kills we know, this allowed for intricate crowd control.

You could force enemies to raise their hands, drop their weapons, or even hand over loot. The code indicates options to command them to move forward or backward, effectively turning an enemy into a human shield or a distraction.

Ellie’s Unused Voicelines

This wasn’t a rough concept. Naughty Dog had already recorded specific dialogue for these interactions. Speclizer found lines like “Don’t do anything stupid,” “Hands where I can see them,” and a classic Ellie quip: “Hello a**hole.”

Why cut it? The “Peek Mode” (another cut feature allowing Ellie to check corners) was likely dropped due to camera issues. The “Hold Up” mechanic, however, might have been removed to streamline the pacing or because the AI couldn’t handle the complexity in dynamic combat.

Development assets rarely go to waste. While this tactical depth didn’t make the final cut for Part II, it strongly suggests Naughty Dog is experimenting with deeper stealth mechanics.

Verdict: The Future of The Last of Us

Neil Druckmann has been brainstorming The Last of Us 3 for a while, and Naughty Dog’s rumored sci-fi title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, is in the pipeline.

This complex hostage system is likely being refined for one of these future titles. For now, if you want to hunt for these secrets yourself, grabbing a key for the Remastered edition or pre-ordering the PC version is your best move.

Do you think a hostage mechanic would have slowed down the combat too much?
