Microsoft could be set to launch Bethesda’s space RPG Starfield and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on Sony’s PlayStation 5. If the rumors are true it could be a monumental shift that changes all future game releases on both Xbox and PlayStation.
As reported on XboxEra and confirmed on The Verge, Microsoft is considering releasing several Xbox and PC exclusive titles on the PS5, including Hi-Fi Rush and Bethesda’s Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
The Verge has revealed that Microsoft officials are planning to release Starfield on PS5 following the launch of the upcoming Shattered Space expansion due in late 2024 on Xbox Series X|S and PC. That would mean a potential PS5 release sometime in 2025.
If rumors and reports are correct, it would be a game-changer for both Xbox and PlayStation as Microsoft and PlayStation have been competing for decades, with a bitter court battle over Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard only being wrapped up late 2023.
There are two ways to look at it. You could believe that Microsoft will feel they must recoup some of the money that they’ve spent on acquiring Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, and many more studios to justify the purchases. Releasing those games on PS5 would be a good way to claw some of that money back. /p>
Another way to see the shift in mindset, and one I believe, is that both Microsoft and Sony are starting to see the benefit of maximizing their exposure, not just financially but from the gaming point of view.
The more we move into a digital gaming age, the less relevant consoles become. Most of us no longer buy an Xbox for the Xbox exclusive games or a PlayStation for PlayStation exclusive games; instead, we simply wait for them to come on PC a year later.
So, if Microsoft decides to release Starfield, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PS5, that’s just one more step to a more open and honest gaming landscape for all of us. And that is a win, no matter how you look at it.
