MICROSOFT COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF ACTIVISION BLIZZARD
In case you missed it, Microsoft has completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in a record-breaking $69 billion deal. The purchase sees Call of Duty, Diablo, and World of Warcraft added to Microsoft’s gaming portfolio.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR XBOX
The deal is great news for PC and Xbox users. Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has already revealed plans to bring Activision Blizzard games to the Xbox Game Pass.
In a blog post following the acquisition, Spencer promised Xbox will “learn, innovate, and continue to deliver on our promise to bring the joy and community of gaming to more people.”
He says, “Whether you play on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, PC, or mobile, you are welcome here – and will remain welcome, even if Xbox isn’t where you play your favorite franchise.”
Spencer doesn’t reveal what games or when they will come to Xbox Game Pass. But it’s clear that it will either be late 2023 or early 2024 before we know more.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR PLAYSTATION
Fortunately, in July, Microsoft and Sony signed a binding agreement that would keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for at least ten years. What happens after that? We will have to wait and see.
So, for now, PS4 and PS5 users will still have CoD, and reading Spencer’s blog post, it seems Microsoft is open to working with other platforms like Nintendo to ensure Activision Blizzard games remain available to everyone.
SUMMARY
Microsoft has acquired Activision Blizzard, and although there are fears they may hold onto the publisher’s games for themselves, it seems they still plan to release upcoming games on other platforms.
Its particularly great news for Xbox and PC users, as Call of Duty, Diablo, and World of Warcraft could hit the Xbox Game Pass in the coming months.
