For years, the silence surrounding the long-anticipated Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake was louder than a thermal detonator. Fans feared the ambitious project had been swallowed by the Sarlacc pit of “development hell,” but a high-level confirmation from Saber Interactive has officially pulled the RPG back into the light.

Since its reveal in 2021, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake has endured studio changes, corporate reorganizations, and a complete lack of gameplay footage.
However, the mystery has finally been addressed by Saber Interactive’s Chief Creative Officer, Tim Willits. Speaking with IGN, Willits revealed that the KOTOR Remake “is still in development” and that when they show it, they want to ensure that “it’s something that people are going to be really excited about.”

The State of the Remake: “It is Still in Development”
The road to this reimagined galaxy has been anything but a smooth hyperspace jump. Originally announced in 2021 by Aspyr Media, the project was later handed over to Saber Interactive following a “disappointing” internal demo and corporate restructuring.
Willits was careful not to overpromise, emphasizing a focus on quality over speed: “It is still in development. That’s all I can say. But we want to make sure that when we do show it, it’s something that people are going to be really excited about,” Willits told IGN.
This brief update suggests that while the active development cycle is ongoing, Saber is keeping the project under a shroud of secrecy to avoid further hype-deflating delays.
Five Years of Uncertainty: Why the Silence?
This shift from Aspyr Media to Saber Interactive. occurred after a vertical slice of the game reportedly failed to meet the expectations of Lucasfilm Games and Sony, leading to a complete “pause” and eventual reboot under new leadership.
Further complicating matters was the $500 million “divorce” between Saber Interactive and the Embracer Group in 2024.
This deal allowed Saber to become a privately owned company, effectively rescuing the KOTOR Remake from the cost-cutting layoffs that claimed many other high-profile titles.
According to legal testimony from Lucasfilm VP Douglas Reilly, reported by Game File, Saber isn’t working alone, as the studio Mad Head Games is also providing critical support to get the project across the finish line.
Perhaps most exciting for long-term fans is that the ambition doesn’t stop with the first game. Reilly’s testimony also confirmed that a KOTOR 2: The Sith Lords remake may already be on the internal roadmap.
Should Fans Stay Hopeful?
Is it time to celebrate? Mostly. The confirmation that the game isn’t dead is the best news we’ve had in years. However, the lack of gameplay or even a fresh screenshot means the release date is likely still far over the horizon.
The project is alive, the team is working, and the dream of a modern-day Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remains intact. For now, patience is the only path forward for the Jedi – or the Sith.
