The story originally came from a now deleted LinkedIn post by Ubisoft Toronto developer Anthony Armstrong. In the post, Armstrong shared that a family member, a huge GTA fan, has been battling cancer for years and has recently been told that he has months to live.

With Grand Theft Auto 6 not expected to release until November, assuming no further delays, they feared he may not be able to reach its launch. Hoping to give him the opportunity to experience it even in an unfinished state, Armstrong wrote an open letter in December asking for help reaching someone at Rockstar Games. His goal was to arrange an exclusive playtest or some form of early access for his terminally ill family member.

The letter received two updates after it was posted. According to Insider Gaming, the first update was that Take Two Interactive CEO had reached out, and the family was waiting to hear back from Rockstar directly. The second and final update confirmed that the family had successfully made contact with Rockstar Games and had received ‘great news.’

   

Following that update, the original LinkedIn post was removed and no further details were shared. It is likely the family is now under an NDA which was expected. So no one really knows outside the family what Rockstar offered or what form the response took. But one can imagine.

Regardless of the specifics, the situation has resonated with many. It serves as a reminder that behind massive franchises like GTA are people who understand what these games can mean to fans, especially in moments that matter most.
