After more than 6 months since its launch, we can certainly say that Palworld has been the big revelation of this first half of 2024. The title by the Pocketpair has seen extraordinary success and has definitely launched the development team into the spotlight. In a recent interview with the Japanese outlet Game*Spark, Takuro Mizobe, the CEO of Pocketpair, speaks about it.
The CEO of Palworld talks about his experience and the success of Pocketpair
In an interview with Game*Spark, Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe, one of the minds behind the massive success of Palworld, speaks. The CEO explains how the success Palworld has received, surpassing all expectations, has certainly changed the team’s standing in the industry. However, as Mizobe emphasizes, he is primarily a passionate developer who wants to be directly involved in the game development process. Despite the success, he sees the future of the industry resting on the shoulders of the indie scene.
Pocketpair confirms that the next won’t be a Big Budget game
Mizobe also states that despite Palworld’s great success, Pocketpair’s next project will not utilize all this budget. He reiterates that not only would such a project be too large for the still inexperienced team, as he puts it, but it would also stray too far from the team’s ideals. That is, a game that is primarily fun and unique, and they wouldn’t even have a way to spend the said budget in a meaningful way for the game. In short, the huge profits from Palworld won’t entirely fund the next project, unlike what happened with Craftopia, which helped fund Palworld itself.
The story of Palworld’s success
Palworld certainly has an interesting story, initially thought to be a joke game like a “Pokémon with guns” when it was first presented in 2021, but then it materialized into a real game. A survival and monster tamer game with cute creatures but not without violence. It saw immediate success, securing the top spot on SteamDB during the first few days after its launch on 19 January 2024. With an active team bringing new features to the game still in Early Access, it remains in 34th place among the most played games on Steam, with a peak of around 40,000 daily players. Additionally, its availability on Xbox Game Pass has certainly helped boost the sales.
What the future holds for Palworld and Pocketpair
As previously stated, we will not see a AAAA game from Pocketpair, which instead intends to remain within the indie game sphere. Indeed, the team has decided to participate as a sponsor at Bitsummit Drift. As for Palworld, we will certainly see many new developments after Sakurajima, but as a franchise, thanks to the establishment of Pal World Entertainment Co., Ltd. in collaboration with Sony Music Entertainment and Aniplex to promote the Palworld brand. The involvement of Aniplex certainly hints at the possibility of even seeing a Palworld animated series.
