First Look at Kyouran Makaism — Nippon Ichi Software’s Bold New Action RPG

First revealed back in March as Project Kyouran, the team at Nippon Ichi Software has officially unveiled Kyouran Makaism, a Musou-style action-adventure game. Let’s find out what it’s all about!

Kyouran Makaism is the new musou-style fantasy action RPG from Nippon Ichi Software (NIS). The famous Japanese development studio and publisher is known mainly for the Disgaea series. A beloved RPG series that debuted in 2003 with Hour of Darkness and now has 7 main installments and numerous spin-offs.

These include the Makai sub-series and the Prinny mascot games, as well as the more recent Phantom Brave series. With Kyouran Makaism, initially known as Project Kyouran, officially presented in March among the team’s new game lineup. Kyouran Makaism: Japan Release Date Revealed

Following the announcement in mid-March of the new projects in development by the NIS team, the team surprisingly announced news about Project Kyouran. Revealing Kyouran Makaism for the first time on September 19, 2025. The new action RPG adventure is coming on January 29, 2026, to PS5 and Nintendo Switch 1 & 2. Unfortunately, this launch will be only in Japan.

It was accompanied by an announcement trailer that shows us the duo of the mercenary Neuer and the rookie ruler Tisiel. On an unlikely and hilarious adventure in the Netherworld to retrieve the First Radiance Pudding. Stolen by a subordinate leading a rebellion. The game features Producer Shunsuke Minowa, and the ever-present Tenpei Sato as composer and Takehito Harada as character designer.

The Latest News on Nippon Ichi Software’s Projects

A title with an interesting look and gameplay, which some amused fans are already commenting on as a mix between the world of Disgaea and the Musou gameplay of Dynasty Warriors. The game will remain a Japanese exclusive for now, with a noticeable lack of a PC version. Which will potentially arrive with the global launch.

But unfortunately, the NIS team also announced the delay of the Projects known as “Curse” and “Gobble”, which were also presented alongside Kyouran Makaism in March 2025. The first is a curse-themed dungeon RPG with classic fantasy classes. And the second is a dark adventure in a comic book style about a boy and a talking scythe. These titles were initially scheduled for release by 2025, but have now been postponed to 2026.

Kyouran Makaism looks to be a fun adventure heavily inspired by the Disgaea series. This time, it offers an Action RPG gameplay with a strong Musou style. The game is scheduled for launch on January 26, 2026, but for now, only in Japan.
