Inside Silent Hill: Townfall — Why It’s Set in 1996 Scotland [Preview]

The grim shores of St. Amelia island are a far cry from the classic American nightmare

We finally have a pulse on Silent Hill: Townfall. The latest developer diary pulls back the curtain on the upcoming PS5 and PC psychological horror.

It turns out, surviving the fog isn’t just about managing ammo anymore. It’s about twisting analog dials while praying nothing hears you.

Key Takeaways: The Quick Answer

  • Silent Hill: Townfall launches in 2026 for PS5 and PC, shifting the series to a claustrophobic first-person perspective.
  • Developer Screen Burn is trading the classic static radio for the CRTV—a pocket television used to find frequencies and spot hidden threats.
  • The setting moves away from the US to the bleak, fog-drenched coastlines of 1996 Scotland.

From Indie Thrillers to Survival Horror Royalty

Scottish studio Screen Burn—the minds behind tense hits like Stories Untold and Observation—never expected the call.

When Annapurna Interactive asked what they would do with the iconic horror franchise, the team froze. But they quickly pitched a unique vision to Konami.

According to lead designer Graeme McKellan, that pitch secured full backing. Now, they are building what is being called one of Annapurna’s biggest releases to date.

First-Person Fear and the CRTV

You play as Simon Ordell, a man sent to the desolate St. Amelia island to “sort things out” in 1996. Naturally, things immediately go wrong.

The game ditches classic fixed-camera angles for a tight first-person perspective. You can manually peek around corners, adding a desperate layer of tension to exploration.

The iconic radio static is also getting a massive upgrade. The CRTV is a pocket-sized television you must manually tune to uncover hidden lore and track incoming enemies.

A Cold, Scottish Nightmare

The developers traded standard American horror tropes for their own backyard. The game leans heavily on the gray, rain-soaked reality of Scottish coastal towns.

It’s a deeply personal backdrop for the development team. That lived-in authenticity is exactly what makes the encroaching fog feel so terrifyingly real.
