Sony Santa Monica, the developer of God of War, is working on its next game, but it is not a new IP, according to an insider. The project is apparently “going well” and “might feel” like a new IP, even though it isn’t one.
Industry insider Jason Schreier has revealed that Cory Barlog, the director of God of War, is working on “his next big thing” with his studio, Santa Monica Studio.
Although Schreier did not expand on his comments, he did clarify that although “it might feel like one,” the game is not a new IP.

Cory Barlog and Sony Santa Monica are keeping details of their ongoing projects under wraps. However, in a forum post, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier responded to a user on Resetera asking about the game, telling them: “Cory Barlog’s game is SSM’s next big thing. Last time I spoke to anyone about it (a month or two ago), it was going well.”
Fans went on to speculate on the game, theorizing it to be a new IP before Schreier corrected them in a response: “I’ll put it this way: it’s not a new IP but it might feel like one,” Schreier explained. “Maybe that’s why people are confused.” Schreier refused to comment further, stating that anything he reveals will be in a future article, not on a forum.
Could It Be a God of War Sequel or Spin-Off?
While we don’t have official confirmation where the God of War series is heading, rumors earlier this year suggest that the IP could head to Ancient Egypt or Ancient Greece in a prequel featuring a younger Kratos as the protagonist.
Schreier’s comments that the game may feel like a new IP would also back up recent claims from Tom Henderson last month that the franchise’s next entry will be a 2.5D Metroidvania, which will be a significant departure from the action RPG genre we’re familiar with when it comes to GoW games.
