It’s official: Amazon MGM Studios has absolute faith in its God of War adaptation. Even though production hasn’t even started, we’ve learned that two seasons have already been internally greenlit. It’s reassuring news for this highly anticipated series, which will adapt the cult saga’s Nordic arc kicked off by God of War (2018).

From the Dark Ages to the Golden Age of Adaptations

If you were around for the early days of video game movie adaptations, you know the road was long and painful. Fortunately, the trend has clearly reversed in recent years.

The line between gaming and cinema is blurring, and the quality is finally there. It is in this favorable context that God of War, the legendary PlayStation franchise, is preparing to land on our screens.

The source material is rock solid. In 2018, Santa Monica Studios pulled off a masterstroke by rebooting the franchise.

Kratos, the former vengeful Greek god, became a stoic and protective father in a ruthless Nordic universe. This shift from mindless hack’n’slash to narrative action-RPG seduced millions of players, and it’s exactly this formula that caught Amazon’s eye.

 

Absolute Confidence: 2 Seasons Already Confirmed

The info comes straight from Deadline: the God of War series has been given the green light for at least two seasons.

This is a mark of confidence rarely seen in the industry today, especially before the cameras have even started rolling. It suggests that the scripts and the overall vision for the project have thoroughly convinced Amazon Prime Video executives.

Concretely, the series will not revisit the Spartan’s Greek origins. It will directly adapt the Nordic adventures of Kratos and his son, Atreus.

It’s a logical choice: the 2018 game’s narrative is much better suited to a series format than the original PS2/PS3 trilogy.

 

Casting and Production: Where Do We Stand?

For now, the project is in the pre-production phase. Sets are starting to be built in Vancouver, the location chosen for filming.

The biggest challenge lies ahead: casting. The teams are actively searching for the two faces that will embody the father-son duo. The pressure is massive, given how iconic these characters are.

While the actors remain unknown, the technical team is enough to reassure even the most skeptical fans.

Here are the confirmed names at the helm:

  • Ronald D. Moore (Showrunner): A sci-fi veteran known for Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, and the excellent For All Mankind. He will also serve as writer and executive producer.
  • Frederick E.O. Toye (Director): He will direct the first two episodes. His resume is solid, with work on Shōgun and The Boys.

With a creative team of this caliber and a commitment to multiple seasons, Amazon seems intent on making God of War its next major critical success, much like Fallout. However, we will have to arm ourselves with patience before seeing the first footage.
