Story and Setting – Kyle Crane’s Revenge Mission
The new title will take us over 13 years after the events of the first game. We’ll play as protagonist Kyle Crane on the hunt for the mysterious The Baron, who has only been partially seen in recent news and overviews. This chapter serves as a bridge between the first and second games, taking place about 2 years after the events of the second game centered around Aiden Caldwell, and revealing what happened to Kyle after the first game.
We find a Kyle Crane seeking revenge for the torture and experiments he suffered at the hands of the Baron. This leads him through what remains of Castor Woods, once a charming town and tourist destination, now in ruins. Players will discover more about the ruthless Baron in an even darker game world, following Kyle’s story of revenge and redemption.
Gameplay and New Mechanics
The Beast offers gameplay that, like the rest of the series, is built on the core mechanics of Zombie Combat and Parkour, bringing many new features and improvements. Notably, Parkour is no longer limited by Stamina, featuring new animations and a more realistic feel. Combined with dynamic combat, it delivers a non-stop action experience. The classic features also make a return:
- Melee Weapons with Durability
- Ranged Weapons with limited Ammo
- Vehicles (fun to use but also risky)
- Classic Day and Night cycle
- Co-op for up to 4 players
This is all accompanied by the major new addition of the Beast Mode. In this mode, it seems Kyle will have access to huge power-ups and abilities thanks to the blood of the Chimeras. We’ll learn more details as we progress through the story.
Trailer Breakdown – The Baron and The Beast
This new Dying Light experience was officially unveiled at Summer Game Fest 2024. The announcement came with a first intriguing trailer, showing a group of soldiers being massacred by something terrifying that stalks the forest at night. This was accompanied by a short, emotional speech from a Kyle filled with rage and seeking revenge.
We also got a first showcase of the locations, parkour, and combat, culminating with a first look at the Chimeras. These are the grotesque creations from the Baron’s experiments. Special infected that are further modified and even more powerful, unpredictable, and above all, dangerous.
What to Expect from Dying Light: The Beast
The experience that Techland offers with this new chapter is certainly much more visceral and dark. It features a game world that is even more brutal, with even more zombies and fewer human factions. But most importantly, the new Virals, victims of the Baron’s experiments who still show traces of humanity. Director Tymon Smektala calls it “the biggest threat Kyle has ever faced.”
Kyle himself seems to be right on the edge between Human and Beast. The main themes are Vengeance, Trauma, and Survival. It’s a fascinating chapter for fans of the series, revealing more about what happened to Kyle. But it’s also a solid starting point for newcomers to the series, with freer and more realistic Parkour and the new Skill tree for Beast abilities.
In Conclusion: Prepare for the Hunt
Dying Light: The Beast presents itself as a new experience that redefines the horror-action formula. It brings an intense story, evolved gameplay, and a darker atmosphere. It’s a new chance to play as Kyle Crane again, something fans have long hoped for, in a brutal new adventure. Will you explore Castor Woods? Let us know in the comments!
