Capcom Removes Enigma DRM from Resident Evil 4 Remake

Capcom removes Enigma DRM from Resident Evil 4 Remake, giving PC players a performance win after weeks of backlash.

Resident Evil 4 Remake DRM

PC players can finally celebrate as the Resident Evil 4 remake has officially been freed from Capcom’s Enigma DRM grip. After a month of frustration, PC players can now enjoy the game with smoother performance and a cleaner overall experience. Hopefully though this isn’t the case of returning to Denuvo eventually.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is now Enigma-Free

When Resident Evil 4 launched, it came with Denuvo attached which is a DRM solution that has long divided the PC community. Many players dislike it outright due to performance and preservation issues, though some understand why publishers use it in the first place.

From a business standpoint, protecting a new release from piracy makes sense. The problem is that DRM has never been foolproof. Those determined to pirate a game usually find a way around it, while legitimate buyers are often the ones dealing with the drawbacks. It’s a debate that has followed PC gaming for years, and Resident Evil 4 Remake became part of that conversation at launch.

But then on February 3, Capcom removed Denuvo from the game which initially felt like a win for PC players. That celebration was short-lived though as the removal was quickly followed by the addition of Capcom’s own Enigma DRM.

Players reported noticeable drops in performance especially on Steam Deck, alongside lower FPS and increased storage usage. What was supposed to be an “improvement” turned into a new headache. It got so bad that some fans began saying they would rather have Denuvo back, which is a funnily ironic twist considering how they’ve wanted it out since launch.

Now, on March 3, players noticed via SteamDB updates that Enigma DRM has been removed from the game entirely. No formal announcement accompanied the change but the lack of replacement DRM has brought relief across the PC community.

That said, this may not be the end of the story. The remake is still less than three years old, and publishers have reversed similar decisions before. For now, though, Resident Evil 4 Remake is free from Enigma and Denuvo.
