About this game

Soul Hackers 2 is a turn-based JRPG developed by Atlus the sequel to “Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers” originally released for the Sega Saturn. In a war between Devil Summoners, the artificial intelligence Aion has predicted the end of the world, to avert this fate it creates and sends out two agents named Ringo and Figue. Their targets in particular are the Devil Summoners, whose deaths will accelerate the end of the world you will need to protect them and revive them if you must using their “Soul Hack” ability.

• Combat is inspired by the Persona series emphasizing exploiting weaknesses, stacking these weaknesses will unlock a special technique called “Sabbath” stylized after the “All-Out-Attack” of the persona series.
• The affinity system will also be more simplified only featuring Fire, Ice, Electricity, and Force, as well as Almighty, Physical skills, and Gunfire.
• All your party members will learn and grow like your standard party members increasing their stats and skills as they level up but they can also equip one devil that can upgrade their stats.
• Your party member’s COMP can be customized with the COMP smith allowing you to enhance them with special effects using materials you find giving them special abilities of your choosing.

Some of the best turn-based combat around mixed with a surprising amount of customization makes Soul Hackers 2 another engrossing winner courtesy of Atlus.

PC Invasion

 

While the game does a good job of establishing the agents of Aion as emerging AI, Soul Hackers 2 tells a deeply human story. This isn’t a shock to me, as Shin Megami Tensei spin-offs have always been more character-focused than the mainline games. I like Soul Hackers 2’s anime noir approach to character building. I recommend it to anyone who likes RPGs or cyberpunk.

The market for a shorter Persona experience is there; Not everyone has the time to sink so much time into a single game. Even for fans of the franchise, the idea of experiencing everything Persona offers in the span of a couple of weekends sounds like heaven in a world where an array of games demand our attention. But Soul Hackers 2’s attempt to deliver a palatable streamlined experience for anyone and everyone should have taken more time to do some soul searching.
