Kain awakens centuries after being overthrown, finding his empire in ruins and his vampire kin nearly gone. Driven by vengeance, he hunts those who betrayed him. Confront dark forces, rebuild his power, and uncover the deadly plot threatening the land.
Kain has arrived on a next-generation console, that’s true. But this doesn’t feel like a true next-generation game. If you can live with that, the dark nature and gritty storyline of the title may outweigh its drawbacks. But there are far better adventure titles for GameCube, and at least one with a more compelling theme and storyline to boot, in Eternal Darkness.
Considering that fact, and considering that neither the combat nor the puzzle elements are completely satisfying, Blood Omen 2 can’t be recommended to everybody. It isn’t quite as great as fans of the series would like, but it still should be given a shot. It’s also worth playing to those lonely for another vampire game or want a change of pace from all the first-person shooters. All these players should find that the story has at least a couple of fine twists, and Kain is as memorable of a main character as they come.
