Amazon’s God of War series finds its Vanir Queen

The Nine Realms have found their Queen of the Vanir. As Amazon Prime Video’s God of War adaptation transitions from myth to reality, the casting of Sonya Walger as Freya signals a shift into high gear. Walger, renowned for her nuanced performance as Penny in Lost, brings the exact blend of divine gravitas and tragic depth required for the “Witch of the Woods.”

Amazon’s God of War series finds its Vanir Queen

Amazon Prime Video’s God of War live-action series has now cast its Freya. According to Variety, playing the role will be Sonya Walger, known for roles in Lost, Anon, and New Life.

Freya’s complex relationship with Kratos and Atreus serves as the heartbeat of the 2018 narrative, and Walger’s history of portraying resilient, layered characters suggests a faithful, and formidable, interpretation of the goddess.

With production intensifying, the live-action pantheon, which has two seasons already ordered, is finally taking shape, which should make even the Ghost of Sparta take notice.

The Vanir Goddess Found: Who is Sonya Walger’s Freya?

Sonya Walger is no stranger to high-stakes drama. Best known for her heart-wrenching performance as Penny in Lost and her recent work in For All Mankind, she has the range to handle Freya’s dual nature.

In the God of War (2018) narrative, Frey* is the story’s emotional anchor. She balances motherly warmth with a simmering, vengeful fury that eventually reshapes the entire pantheon. Walger’s ability to portray quiet strength makes her a perfect fit for a goddess trapped by both her past and her magic.

Confirmed Cast and Release Window

The casting of Freya completes a heavy-hitting lineup for the first season. Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) takes the lead as Kratos. He is joined by Callum Vinson as Atreus and the legendary Mandy Patinkin as Odin.

Filming officially began in Vancouver in February 2026 and is expected to wrap in April 2027. While Amazon hasn’t pinned a specific date on the calendar yet, the massive scale of post-production for the Nine Realms suggests a late 2027 or early 2028 release.

A Casting Masterstroke?

Choosing an actress with Walger’s pedigree suggests Amazon is leaning into a faithful, character-driven adaptation rather than a mindless action romp.
