DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake is now Denuvo-free, less than five months after launch, following Square Enix’s trend of removing the DRM.

Square Enix continues to take charge among major video game publishers to take Denuvo out of their games. In a recent update on SteamDB, DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake no longer has DRM, just over 4 months from launching.

Another high-profile title has finally kicked Denuvo to the curb, and this time it’s the DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake. A SteamDB update yesterday confirmed the bundle is now officially free from the DRM that’s frustrated players for years.

The game only launched in October 2025 so basically it carried Denuvo for less than five months. It’s a small window but also long enough for anyone who dislikes the DRM.

While the timing might be a little surprising, the move itself isn’t. Square Enix has been steadily removing Denuvo from its games. It also mirrors what they did for DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake which got free of Denuvo after 6 months form launch.

For players, this is good news not just for smoother gameplay but also for preserving the longevity of their libraries. Without this, there’s more freedom to replay, stream, or mod games without extra hassle. Let’s just hope Square Enix doesn’t get any funny ideas from Capcom and replace Denuvo with in-house Enigma-like DRM.

   

DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake is a modern remake of the first two classic entries in the Erdrick trilogy, combining both adventures into a single package with updated HD-2D visuals while keeping the series’ traditional turn-based gameplay. Players can start either Dragon Quest or Dragon Quest II, following descendants of the legendary hero Erdrick as they travel across the land of Alefgard to defeat rising evil forces such as the Dragonlord. Along the journey, players explore towns, castles, caves, and dungeons, recruit royal heirs including the Prince of Midenhall and the Princess of Moonbrooke, sail across seas once they obtain a ship, and battle monsters using classic turn-based combat with weapons, spells, and abilities.
