Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game was a board game adaptation of the popular video game that was funded via Kickstarter. In total, USD 5.6 million was pledged by more than 28,000 backers. The game, featuring many miniatures and expansions, was planned to be delivered to supporters across multiple shipping waves. However, after years of delays, additional payment requests to backers, and financial problems at Mythic Games, the project has now officially failed.
Why Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game is not being released
The reason why Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game is not being released is a financial crisis at the publisher Mythic Games. The company specializes in Kickstarter board game projects but has now officially been liquidated after failing to publish its annual financial statements and running into serious financial trouble. Even earlier, Mythic had asked backers for additional money to cover rising production and shipping costs, which caused major distrust within the community. After all, backers had already paid between 100 USD and 300 USD to support the project.
Hello everyone. As many of you know, the financial situation at Mythic Games has been strained for many years. We’ve kept an eye on the situation, hoping for the best. Unfortunately, Mythic Games is no longer able to manufacture or deliver the Darkest Dungeon board game.

Parts of the game, including the English core game and some expansions, were already shipped in “Wave 1”, but Wave 2 with additional components was never produced. Many backers remained in contact with the publisher for a long time but never received their game, including some who had pledged more than 300 USD to support development. At the end of January 2026, Red Hook Studios finally confirmed that Mythic Games was unable to manufacture or deliver the game. Red Hook Studios expressed deep disappointment with Mythic Games. As a result, the board game remains incomplete for many supporters and will never be released to the market.
What backers receive now
Red Hook Studios stated that they do not have their own manufacturing or distribution capabilities for the project. However, all backers were provided with a digital download containing all relevant game data, including the rules and 3D models for the miniatures. In theory, these files allow backers or third parties to produce or print the game themselves, but many feel disappointed since no official physical version will ever be released. The situation is considered one of the most prominent failures of a major Kickstarter board game project, especially given that more than USD 5 million was pledged.
