Why Is Blizzard Adding Third-Party Games to Battle.net?
Blizzard Entertainment curates select third-party PC titles tailored to its established player base rather than transforming Battle.net into an open digital storefront like Steam.
Blizzard executive Andrew Guerrero confirmed the company rejects self-publishing systems, choosing instead to manually approve high-profile releases that complement the catalog for existing Blizzard and action-RPG enthusiasts.
Andrew Guerrero clarified that the platform will not imitate Valve or the Epic Games Store by accepting uncurated catalog floods. Blizzard Entertainment intentionally restricts distribution to projects matching its community focus.
Storefront engineers updated the launcher backend to accommodate external software without engineering completely reworking the frameworks for individual partners. Management retains strict veto authority over every potential catalog candidate.

Battle.net Expands Beyond the Traditional Blizzard Catalog
Battle.net originally debuted in 1997 alongside the original Diablo release to coordinate multiplayer connections and matchmaking lobbies. The digital service functioned exclusively as a dedicated first-party client for two decades until Destiny 2 launched on the software in 2017.
Corporate consolidation introduced several Activision properties to the launcher in recent years, including Call of Duty and Crash Bandicoot. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard accelerated the addition of external titles like Sea of Thieves, Avowed, and Doom: The Dark Ages.
CD Projekt Red represents the first major European external publisher to distribute sprawling single-player RPG epics across the Battle.net ecosystem. Blizzard Entertainment plans to evaluate early engagement metrics before authorizing further third-party catalog deals.
