Activision appears keen to give the Call of Duty machine a major reset. Following what many believe is a disappointing year for the franchise, whispers are getting louder about a huge shakeup coming in 2027.

The latest Call of Duty leaks suggest developer Sledgehammer Games is launching an entirely new sub-series in 2027, complete with major changes to movement and, shockingly, the potential removal of a fan-favorite mode.
This rumor, coming from insider TheGhostOfHope on X, hints at a breath of fresh air the community needs, or a massive gamble for the developers.
Call of Duty 2027: Shaking Up the Black Ops and MW Cycle
All signs currently point to the 2027 Call of Duty title being the first major product of Activision’s commitment to stop back-to-back releases from the same sub-series (like Modern Warfare or Black Ops), with Sledgehammer Games reportedly the studio developing the new title.
The biggest news? It’s to be a completely new sub-series featuring an entirely new cast of characters. Earlier reports suggested the setting to be in the late 1990s/early 2000s. However, fellow insider CharlieIntel says sources are telling them it is set in the modern era.
EXCLUSIVE: COD2027 made by Sledgehammer Games will be a new sub franchise with completely new characters set in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

Core Gameplay: Omnimovement Without Tactical Sprint
The gameplay leaks for this new Call of Duty are just as dramatic as the setting change, focusing on a major overhaul of how players move around the map.
- The popular omnimovement system (first seen in Black Ops 6) is expected to remain, offering dynamic, multi-directional traversal.
- The critical shift is the planned removal of Tactical Sprint and other hyper-fast movement mechanics like wall-running. This combination suggests a desire to keep the movement fluid and responsive but dial back the breakneck, “slide-cancel” speed that dominates the competitive scene.
- Another key discussion is the potential return of the beloved Pick 10 class creation system, which hasn’t been the core system in years. Honestly, the return to this more tactical, loadout-balancing system would be a huge win for long-time multiplayer fans.

Call of Duty 2027’s Missing Mode: Is Zombies Out?
The most controversial leak circulating right now is the potential absence of the iconic Zombies mode from the 2027 release. This is a massive bombshell, considering the mode is a foundational and massively popular pillar of the franchise.
The reasoning behind this, according to insiders, is to prevent Treyarch (the studio most tied to Zombies) from burning out, especially after their consecutive releases.
In its place, rumors suggest the cult-classic ‘Get High’ mode might return. This parkour and obstacle course mode could serve as a more casual, movement-focused alternative to the standard multiplayer and campaign experience. While an interesting replacement, I know many players consider ‘No Zombies’ a huge deal-breaker.
Verdict: Will Call of Duty 2027 Be Worth the Hype?
If the leaks prove true, Call of Duty 2027 from Sledgehammer Games will provide a much-needed breath of fresh air for the franchise. Whether or not it’s set in the late 90s and early 2000s, the commitment to new characters and the move away from the MW/Black Ops cycle are huge positives.
Which of these leaks is the most exciting for you? Is a new sub-series enough to get you back into Call of Duty in 2027, or is the lack of Zombies a deal-breaker? Let us know in the comments!
