Fatal Frame: Maiden of Blackwater is an adventure horror game developed by Koei Tecmo Game Studio, their fifth entry in the Fatal Frame/Project Zero series. This port will come with a few modernization improvements, like widescreen resolution support and updated visuals. Maiden of Blackwater takes place in the Infamous Mt. Hikami, once a place of great religious importance, now it lies abandoned and has become the site of many unfortunate accidents and disappearances. Play as three protagonists who are mysteriously connected, as each of them enters the cursed mountain for their own reasons.

• Camera Obscura: Your main weapon and utility against the evil that lurks in the mountain, it’s capable of repelling and sealing vengeful ghosts; it can also detect and reveal other things and items that are not visible to the human eye.
• The game is divided into three missions, each led by a different protagonist: Yuri Kozukata, Ren Hojo, and Miu Hinasaki. Each of them has the ability called shadow reading, which allows them to see the memories of people who have been consumed by the mountain.
• Post-Game content – play as a new character, Ayane, a ninja of the Kunoichi clan. She is unable to use the Camera Obscura, but with her ninja training, she can avoid most ghosts in the night.

FATAL FRAME: Maiden of Black Water Reviews

Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water is the weakest of the Fatal Frame games and this remastered version fails to address its biggest issues, namely clunky traversal mechanics and a seriously wooden cast of characters. However, look past these shortcomings and, especially for fans of the series, there’s still a lot to enjoy in the solid ghost-snapping action on offer here. It may not be the best game in the franchise, but this remaster will still give your spine a good tingle if you let it.

Pure Xbox

You spend a lot of time in-game wading through water and this serves as a perfect metaphor for how playing the game feels. There is too much repetition in the location and the combat; you have pretty much seen everything there is to it by the end of the second chapter. You still have 11 more to go by this point, and that is excluding the interludes. For such a promising premise, it is impressive how quickly the game falls flat.

Besides a few creepy images of certain ghosts, there is nothing that really causes much of a jump let alone a true scare, and whilst the story has the potential to be one of true Japanese horror, the horrible pacing and repetitive nature ensure that the Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water goes down as an underwhelming return for what used to be one of the greatest series in horror gaming.
