Fade to Silence is an open-world survival crafting game developed by Black Forest Games, set in a post-apocalyptic world that is frozen in an eternal winter. Step into the shoes of Ash, a natural leader gather the resources necessary to establish a refuge for survival. With dwindling resources, simple tasks like upgrading equipment and collecting materials quickly require an expedition to scavenge the necessary items.

• Navigate a vast territory in which you will encounter eldritch abominations and an even greater foe, the savage winter itself. Freezing temperatures will constantly take their toll on ash. Be careful of blizzards; if caught by surprise, it will take every ounce of skill you have to survive.
• Attract followers to bring them into your refuge. Every skilled individual grants access to higher-tier resources and gear. Without followers, you will only be able to scavenge the barest necessities, crafting only makeshift tools and weapons.
• The dynamic weather system adds to the immersion of survival in a cold, corrupted world. Survival depends on how well you read weather patterns, and if you made the right decision to look for shelter or to press on home.
• Look for tracks in the show; snow displacement leaves a realistic path by both player characters and NPCs. This telltale sign will tell you regions where it is good to hunt and regions where monsters are roaming.

The world is stark, cold and unwelcoming, and there’s a discomposing atmosphere that always puts you on edge. Fade to Silence isn’t for everyone, but for those who want to experience a harsh, unforgiving world, this is just the ticket – just don’t rush into permadeath mode right away.

All in all, Fade to Silence has been an enjoyable experience for me. It’s got the resource management and camp building that I seem to be drawn to and challenging but not Soulsbourne level enemies to tackle. The glitches are easily fixed with patches (knock on wood that they are in the pipeline), and there’s a decently sized map to explore with hidden passages and caverns to loot.

With just a little more time in the cooker, Fade to Silence could have fleshed out these mechanics. This is the kind of game that thrives off an expanded scope. The vision for this unique world is there and, for the most part, it delivers.
