Black Panther Game Canceled as EA Closes Developer Cliffhanger Games
EA cancels Black Panther game and shuts down Cliffhanger Games amid layoffs, refocusing on core franchises and Marvel’s Iron Man.
Despite recent efforts to restructure, troubled waters surrounding EA have not subsided. The gaming giant has entered another round of layoffs and this time, a highly anticipated title has fallen victim.
Black Panther, a project that had generated significant fan excitement, has been officially canceled.
EA Shutsdown Cliffhanger Games Including Black Panther Project
The roughly 300 employees affected by last month’s layoffs weren’t the end of EA’s major shakeups. In a more sweeping move, EA has now shutdown Cliffhanger Games, the studio formed in 2023 under the leadership of former Monolith Productions executive Kevin Stephens. This studio was created specifically to develop Black Panther, a third-person, single-player action-adventure title set in Wakanda. Developed in collaboration with Marvel Games, the project was expected to offer a cinematic, immersive superhero experience but that vision has now been scrapped entirely.
In an internal message to staff, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele explained the decision is part of a broader company effort to sharpen its creative focus and prioritize its most promising growth opportunities. Her email noted that this latest wave of cuts and cancellations aligns with a renewed emphasis on a tighter portfolio of key franchises. EA will now focus its creative resources on Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends. These are the titles EA believes will define its next phase of growth.

Despite the loss of Cliffhanger Games and the Black Panther project, Miele emphasized that EA is continuing development on major existing efforts. The Iron Man game currently underway at Motive Studios remains in production, alongside the third entry in the Star Wars: Jedi series. EA’s mobile business will also continue to be a focus, and BioWare remains committed to developing the next Mass Effect.
It’s also worth noting that EA Sports was not mentioned in Miele’s memo because EA Sports operates as a separate division. This division is unaffected by this particular development.
