UPDATE Battlefield 6 Crossplay Upgrade Lets Console Gamers Avoid PC Matchups
EA clarifies what happens when the Battlefield 6 crossplay toggle is set to disabled. Console-only crossplay is not happening.
Update – According to a report by Dexerto, EA clarifies that the console-only crossplay is incorrect. When this feature is disabled, only players within the same platform can be in the matchmaking pool.
We are inching closer to Battlefield 6’s launch and EA knows exactly how to keep the excitement burning. And no this isn’t another leak but a confirmed feature that many console players have been waiting for. Console-only crossplay.
Battlefield 6 Crossplay Allows For Console-only pool
Technical director Christian Buhl and senior console combat designer Matthew Nickerson recently spoke with IGN about the game’s development and design on consoles. They discussed several exciting topics including different modes on PS5, performance differences on PS5 Pro, and how Xbox Series S compares to Series X.
However, one point stood out to console players regardless of platforms: the ability to avoid crossplay with PC players.
It’s not news to anyone that PC players hold a significant advantage with crossplay games. On top of that, many cheaters seem to be on that side of gaming. So, Battlefield Studios is giving console players an up, not with advantage, but offering the option to players with console gamers only.
Nickerson explained that when Battlefield 6 launches, it will have a simple in-game toggle to enable or disable crossplay. This, by itself, is great news to many as some players need to dig through the menu just to find this switch.
But even better is that when console players switch it off, it enables console-only crossplay. Basically, Xbox and Playstation users only.
Crossplay is enabled by default so when users do not switch it off, PC players may fill the spots. Meaning, when a console player enters matchmaking, the system will prioritize filling the lobby with other console players within a “set time frame” before adding PC players if necessary. So the default setting is already good but with switching it off, it gets better.
This isn’t the first console-only crossplay but it’s always good to see that more games adapt this feature.
