Ubisoft reportedly canceled an Assassin’s Creed game to avoid controversy, according to a new report. The game was apparently set at the end of the American Civil War and would have followed a black protagonist during the Reconstruction era.

Assassin’s Creed Game Set in American Civil War Canceled by Ubisoft to Avoid Controversy

The now-canceled Assassin’s Creed title was reportedly in development and was to take the series to the 1860s and 1870s, during the Reconstruction era following the American Civil War.

In a new report by Game File, sources reportedly revealed that while “people were enthusiastic,” Ubisoft felt it could cause controversy because it followed a black Assassin, and due to the current political climate in the US.

What the Canceled Assassin’s Creed Game Was About

According to sources that spoke to Game File, the Assassin’s Creed game was set in the years immediately following the American Civil War, following a black Assassin who was previously enslaved in the South before being recruited after moving west following the war.

The game would apparently see the protagonist “fight for justice” in an uncertain world, and would have seen him stand up and “confront the emergence of the Ku Klux Klan.”

Why Ubisoft Reportedly Canceled the Project

The Game File’s report states that multiple sources revealed Ubisoft decided to cancel the game, partly due to the backlash in spring 2024 when the company revealed Yasuke, the black samurai from Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and due to “concern” that the political climate in the US was becoming “increasingly intense.”

Ubisoft ultimately felt the game could potentially cause too much controversy and decided to stop work on it, with the game seemingly in the concept phase. One source told Game File that the game was “too political in a country too unstable, to make it short.”

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Success

Following a few years of turbulence and uncertainty at Ubisoft, many feel the company has got it right with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which surpassed 5 million players in July, four months after its launch on PC and consoles in March.
