Anthem Is Shutting Down – Removed from EA Play Ahead of Server Closure

Anthem is officially shutting down as EA and BioWare end support. The game will be removed from EA Play ahead of its server closure.

Anthem has fought a long, uphill battle since its rocky debut .It was filled with hope, disappointment, and multiple attempts at redemption. Now, that fight is coming to a close. EA and BioWare have officially confirmed that Anthem will shut down permanently, with servers going offline in January 2026.

When Anthem launched in 2019, many players had high hopes for BioWare’s bold new live-service IP. On paper, the concept was exciting, a squad-based looter-shooter featuring Iron Man-style exo-suits and dynamic flight combat across a lush alien world.

But the reality fell short. At launch, Anthem was met with mixed reviews, largely due to its lack of content, a thin and forgettable story, and clunky, frustrating gameplay systems. The game quickly became an example of over-promised and under-delivered.

Over the years, EA and BioWare tried to fix it. A rework was in the works, meant to reinvent the core mechanics and breathe new life into the game. But by 2021, internal discussions reportedly centered on whether to continue the revamp or cut their losses entirely. The rework was ultimately scrapped but Anthem managed to stay online for four more years.

Now, the final chapter has been written. Anthem will officially sunset on January 12, 2026. On that date, the game’s servers will go offline. And because Anthem is an online-only game, it will no longer be playable in any form afterward. Players with remaining in-game currency will have until then to use them up.

   

Although the server shutdown won’t occur until next year, EA is starting to wind things down already. Anthem will be removed from the EA Play playlist on August 15, 2025, making it unavailable to new subscribers via EA’s service well before the final closure.
