Among The Trolls (ATG) is a first-person survival game set in Finnish forests. The game was originally announced on 17 May 2022, by the team at Forbidden Studios, with an Early Access release initially planned for 2023.
Unfortunately, news about the game disappeared, leaving many players losing hope. But in 2025, just days before February, an announcement brought it back to life.
Among The Trolls – New Announcement with Trailer
After over 2 years of silence, publisher 505 Pulse, a division of 505 Games, has finally shared new updates about Among The Trolls. A new announcement on the Steam blog was accompanied by a teaser trailer.
On 23rd January 2025, they announced ATG’s return, now with a new look and a new development team. The goal is to honor the original vision of Forbidden Studios while introducing fresh additions, creating a new experience in the survival genre, as confirmed by Giorgio Macellari, creative director of Avantgarden Games.
Among The Trolls: What’s Changed
With the new development team, some changes to ATG’s story are already apparent. While the original offered a choice between Alex and Anna, this new project will focus only on Anna. The core story remains unchanged, as Anna travels from the United States to Finland to visit her grandparents, only to end up stranded alone on a remote island.
The biggest change is in the graphics engine, shifting from Unity to Unreal Engine 5. This transition has led to a noticeable visual difference, mainly due to development convenience. The CEO and Technical Director of Forbidden Studios had extensive experience with Unity, having worked on the Ori series.
Among The Trolls: Development History and Release Date
Among The Trolls’ development journey has been rocky. The game’s vision came from Forbidden Studios CEO Veli Kokkonen, inspired by Finnish folklore and ancient shamanic arts, with a university-level background in the subject. The game was originally planned for Early Access in 2023 under publisher 505 Games.
However, the team disbanded around March 2023, leaving the project in limbo until 2025. And was then handed to the Italian studio at Avantgarden Games. Known for The Last Day of June and the remake of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, they are now supported by 505 Pulse, the indie-focused division of 505 Games. Early Access is now expected in 2025.
Conclusion
The project has now been taken over by Avantgarden Games, who have access to the original documentation and vision. While some small changes to the original concept are noticeable, the promise is that Among The Trolls will arrive in 2025. With the team revealing further updates in the coming weeks. These will reveal more about the direction this reboot is heading in.
