Expanding the Oasis Mystery
Developer 11 bit studios has officially released the first major paid expansion for its DICE Award-winning sci-fi survival game. The Alters: The Last Variable picks up immediately after one of the base game’s most poignant endings, the narrative focuses exclusively on Jan Scientist.
Choosing to remain on the hostile alien planet rather than escaping, this version of Jan is driven by an obsession with the Oasis. This lush, unexplained paradise defies all known planetary logic, requiring extensive research to understand its connection to the cloning substance Rapidium.
To tackle this massive undertaking, Jan must generate four new specialized Alters: a Geologist, a Biologist, a Chemist, and a Physicist. Each brings a distinct philosophy regarding the scientific method, generating ideological friction that players must actively manage.
What Are the New Mechanics in Last Variable?
The Last Variable expansion introduces three major gameplay systems: planetary terraforming, underground base construction, and a tiered scientific research tree. Players must transform barren sectors into habitable biomes while managing the planet’s hostile retaliatory measures, such as earthquakes and severe radiation surges.
This shift replaces the base game’s constant flight from a lethal sun with a focus on permanent settlement. Terraforming directly provokes the environment, creating a responsive feedback loop where the planet actively resists your expansion efforts.
To survive these escalating threats, players must establish an underground base. This requires navigating different soil types and constructing advanced modules, marking a significant departure from the wheeled mobile station’s cramped modularity.

The Cost of Cryosleep and Aging Alters
11 bit studios is known for weaving heavy moral decisions into survival mechanics, and this expansion applies that pedigree to the passage of time. In a major shift from the original game, only the original Jan Scientist can utilize the newly introduced Cryosleep Chamber.
The alternate crew members—the Geologist, Biologist, Chemist, and Physicist—must continue their research in Field Labs while Jan sleeps. Because they lack cryosleep protection, these Alters physically age during these cycles.
Years of continuous labor and exposure fundamentally change their priorities and personalities. Every time Jan awakens, he must face a crew that has grown older, more cynical, and potentially ready to abandon the mission entirely.
