We already told you about the Bloom & Blight update last month, and surprise, surprise, it has just been deployed on Aloft. Don’t panic, we’ll unpack it all for you right here, but be warned in advance: it’s also the most significant one of the Early Access so far.
Like Griffith, have you always dreamed of having wings? As luck would have it, with Aloft you certainly won’t need to sacrifice all your friends to get them. Note that this would be a real shame in a game so focused on multiplayer.
Head in the Clouds: World Generation Overhaul
In case you missed it, Aloft is above all a promise: to be able to soar through the skies in a wingsuit, turning every floating island into your own ship and base of operations. Halfway between a survival, exploration, and construction game, the title from Astrolabe Interactive Inc. thus offers a unique sandbox experience, cozier than the competition, especially with 7 friends on hand.
So what’s new, you ask? Well, for starters, a major overhaul of the world generation system.
Without going into detail, this new version will offer a denser universe, more rewarding exploration, and will serve as a richer and more flexible foundation for future updates. A significant background effort for the future, then, and one that can already be felt controller in hand.
New Progression Mechanics: The Tree of Life
But it’s also all the progression mechanics that have been revised and corrected. From now on, players will have clearer control over what they unlock thanks to a division of the technology trees into three separate categories. We quote it verbatim:
- a knowledge tree for basic machines, to be progressed using knowledge stones.
- a navigation tree that will concern all navigation equipment (yes, that was logical), to be progressed using abandoned anchors.
- finally, a research tree for remedies, the progression of which will be linked to corruption anomalies as well as the laboratory.
Furthermore, the game’s pace will be more engaging, with sectors each containing three life sprout islands. The idea will be to restore their color by healing their ecosystem, before transforming into a gust of wind to regrow the vegetation in your wake.
Once the three islands are healed, the sector’s tree of life will bloom again, allowing you to recover clairvoyance for your technology trees. In short, a gameplay loop that leaves players less abandoned. And even better, it will reward you with windy lines, synonymous with fast travel between archipelagos.
More Dangers: The New Sportox and Flogade Strains
Beyond these structural changes, Astrolabe Interactive took the opportunity to stuff its game with new content. Two new corruption strains, Sportox and Flogade, are now spreading across the skies. The key takeaway: new scientific breakthroughs, which are always good to have. As for the corruption nodules, they have been redesigned to encourage exploration, meaning you’ll need to find all their weak points to overcome them.
Challenges for which you won’t be unprepared, as new tools are also making an appearance. The windstone tools, with a larger area of effect, and the serrated bone tools, the most powerful in the game with a devastating final combo. In short, now is the time to feel your wings sprout.
Start Over to Enjoy It Better
A small word of warning: such changes haven’t been made without bumps. You will absolutely have to start a new game to access them. Old saves will no longer be compatible with this version, but you can still find them by switching to the previous version branch on Steam. Just goes to show, Aloft really thought of everything.
