Fans hoping to see Balatro update 1.1 this year will now have to wait until 2026 after developer LocalThunk revealed he prefers to work “slow.” The solo developer continues to work on the update alone and says he wants to preserve his “hobbyist” attitude towards game development.

Balatro was a massive success at launch with its addicting, roguelike deckbuilding gameplay, and its solo developer, LocalThunk, wants to maintain his approach of slow development when it comes to the 1.1 update.
LocalThunk promised the highly anticiapted 1.1 update in 2025, but that has now been pushed back after the developer said in a recent statement that he “shouldn’t have announced any date for the 1.1 update at all.”
Reason Behind the Delay
Detailed during his long update on his blog, LocalThunk describes himself as a “hobbyist at heart” and says he “burned out” after working on its 1.01 balance patch and mobile port immediately after the game’s launch in 2023.
Despite not giving a new release date window, LocalThunk promises he is “working slowly” and that he “likes it that way.” By approaching it in a more relaxed manner, the developer believes he is able to give his “best version” when he comes back to his keyboard “every day, healthy, and hopefully just as excited about game development 5 years from now.”
To those concerned, LocalThunk says the update will be “done when it’s done” and will be a “free update for everyone on all platforms.” He also says that the “Balatro player in me will absolutely not allow me to walk away from developing this game.”
Expected Features of Balatro 1.1
Balatro 1.1 will be free when it eventually rolls out on PC, consoles, and mobile. When announcing it in August 2024, Local Thunk promised it would expand the game with “new ideas and strategies.”
Without revealing too much, the developer says fans shouldn’t expect a new game but rather an expansion of it that fills “out the design space that currently exists, and then extending that design space in interesting directions that I think people are going to love.”

Developer Transparency
LocalThunk’s honest and transparent statement about the delay to the 1.1 update has been received well by fans, with many accepting his desire for more time to deliver a quality-focused update.
The developer’s approach will also spark discussion around game development priorities. While many developers and publishers employ an intense crunch to ensure games and updates launch on time, LocalThunk hopes his slower pace will mean a polished experience that aligns with his and players’ expectations.
Conclusion
Balatro update 1.1 has been delayed. The update, which will launch for free across all platforms when it rolls out, was supposed to be released in 2025. Developer LocalThunk has apologized to fans and says it will be released when it’s ready. What do you think about the developer’s recent statement? Let us know in the comments.
