Allkeyshop tested the Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo at Gamescom. Here are our first impressions of Capcom’s upcoming samurai action game.

Allkeyshop’s special Gamescom correspondent Killian had another run at one of the most-anticipated titles at Gamescom, Onimusha Way of the Sword. There was a bit of a line to test it out but the game’s booth setup made the wait entertaining. As for the demo? As expected, incredible.

Onimusha Way of the Sword is one of those titles at Gamescom many are excited to try out. And even before you get your hands on the demo, you’ll get transported to Japan with Capcom’s amazing setup. Apart from the anticipation and excitement, this got you more in the mood for some samurai action.

In the demo, regular combat revolves around reducing enemy stamina. Once an enemy has taken enough hits and their stamina is depleted, you can perform a finishing cut. While this feels satisfying the first few times, it might become repetitive in the long run since some enemies cannot be defeated without using it.

The sword combat itself felt smooth and fluid, with responsive controls that made every strike impactful. Dodging was equally well designed, and performing a perfect dodge even left a shadow of your former position, adding a stylish and rewarding visual effect.

The Oni Gauntlet plays a key role in the story and gameplay. Through the influence of a mysterious miasma, it allows the protagonist Musashi Miyamoto to speak and even see into the past and the realm of the dead. The gauntlet also grants access to a special attack with dual short swords, which can unleash a powerful strike dealing heavy damage.

The demo’s boss fight was challenging. Players must dodge heavy attacks while trying to drain the boss’s stamina in order to bring him down effectively. Souls are another mechanic to manage: enemies drop souls, and while regular foes release them upon death, bosses lose souls whenever they are struck. Collecting them during the boss fight is tricky, since the boss never gives you much of a pause, making resource management part of the challenge.

Overall, Onimusha Way of the Sword was fun, challenging, and rewarding that surely made every player in that line wanting more. The visuals are great, the gameplay solid, and the story promising. It’s definitely a worthy mainline entry into the series after so long.

Onimusha Way of the Sword is targeted to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game was featured on the second day of Xbox@Gamescom Broadcast with a Developer Interview and Gameplay Overview.
