Masahiro Sakurai reveals all the details on the new Kirby Air Riders, coming November 20, 2025, to Nintendo Switch 2!

Kirby Air Riders is the new installment and direct sequel to Kirby Air Ride. A new racing spin-off title for the famous Kirby, following the first game’s release in 2003 on the GameCube. Marking the return, as well as the first Kirby-themed project from its creator Masahiro Sakurai in over 20 years.

Riders offers a colorful racing game where Kirby & Co. will face off aboard their Air Ride machines. The project has been in full development since 2022. Notably by Bandai Namco with supervision from Sakurai, and not by HAL Laboratory. It was officially announced during the Nintendo Direct on April 2, 2025. Kirby Air Riders: Release Date Revealed for Nintendo Switch 2

With the announcement of the dedicated Nintendo Direct, on August 19 we got some of the biggest news of the day, including updates on Kirby Air Riders. It was a long Direct, a full 45 minutes dedicated to the new racing spin-off chapter for Kirby & Co. All of it was hosted by the series’ Director and Creator, Masahiro Sakurai.

He gave us a deep dive into the game. We got info on the development, new features, and even a gameplay showcase. They showed off various game maps and modes, including the return of Air Ride and City Trial modes. The presentation wrapped up with the confirmation of the launch for November 20, 2025, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.

 

Kirby Air Riders: Features and News from the Nintendo Direct

Riders is therefore shaping up to be a true direct sequel to the 2003 spin-off on the GameCube. This means it’s bringing lots of new stuff both in graphics and in gameplay that Nintendo has polished for over 20 years. Sakurai showed us the various new additions in the sequel, offering:

  • The Riders: With the return of classic characters from the series, including the one and only Kirby, King Dedede, and the famous Meta Knight. Each has their own playstyle and unique traits like performance, weight, special, melee attacks, and more.
  • The Air Ride Machines: The special machines that let the Riders compete. They have many unique factors like speed and combat. They can take different amounts of damage. Plus, they automatically accelerate forward.
  • Techniques and Abilities: With various abilities at our disposal. There’s the Boost Charge (B Button), which not only lets you go faster but also allows for drifting. The Specials (Y Button) will unleash our Rider’s Special ability.

Among the new additions is the Copy Ability, which allows you to temporarily copy the abilities of your opponents. This makes the gameplay more balanced and unpredictable. Sakurai also showed us the return of the City Trial mode in the flying city of Skyah. With various power-ups to find to defeat opponents, random Field Events, and the Dustup Derby. Plus, the chance to encounter Bosses, like Dyna Blade and Kracko.
