The time has come. Finally. After years of waiting for the fact and weeks of waiting for the update, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 will no longer be part of COD HQ starting tomorrow.

 

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II & III Leaves COD HQ

In an official announcement posted by Call of Duty on X, both Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III will become standalone downloads, separate from the Call of Duty HQ launcher, starting July 29 at 9 AM PT / 6 PM CEST. This means players will no longer need to go through COD HQ to access either game once the update goes live.

As part of this change, players will need to redownload MW2 and MW3 in their new standalone formats as the shift away from COD HQ requires a fresh install. Also part of the announcement was that the legacy content related to MW2 and MW3 will be removed from COD HQ on August 7.

   

For many fans, this move is a relief. COD HQ has been a constant source of criticism over the past two years with hogging massive storage space and causing performance issues and bugs. On top of that, even accidentally leaking details of future titles, which have or haven’t pleased the fans (depends who you ask). There’s been a long-running call in the community to abandon COD HQ entirely, with many praising this update as a step in the right direction.

Still, the reason behind this cleanup isn’t just fan service. In reality, Activision is clearing space ahead of the launch of Black Ops 7, expected to be one of the biggest entries in the series in recent years.
