WHEN WILL PS5 AND XBOX CHIP SHORTAGES END?
AMD CEO Lisa Su recently said the global chip and semiconductor shortage affecting the supply of PCs, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles would end in late 2022 or early 2023.
Unfortunately, Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel, has told CNBC that he expects the shortages to continue into 2024.
COVID-19 saw many people in lockdown and forced to stay at home, which raised the demand for consoles and PCs.
That demand, however, far outweighed the supply as workforces were cut and work on manufacturing ground to a halt due to the coronavirus threat.
Gelsinger told CNBC that shortages continue because critical manufacturing “shortages have now hit equipment and some of those factory ramps will be more challenged.”
Microsoft recently paid manufacturers for chip priority, resulting in more Xbox Series X console supplies, but that came at the cost of PS5 stocks.
So, it looks like Xbox, PlayStation, and PC parts will continue to suffer from stock shortages, with 2024 now being suggested as an end date.
With no end in sight for the next couple of years, Gelsinger said that Intel is looking at moving their factories to the US, which will hopefully see them less dependent on Asia markets.
