Zelda Live-Action Movie Director Targets Realistic World Adaption

From a recent interview with director Wes Ball, we get some insights into the Live-Action cinematic adaptation of one of the most beloved franchises of all time, also a flagship for Nintendo, Zelda. In fact, while we now know for sure that the film will be made starting from November 2023, thanks to the interview, we have some idea of what Wes Ball wants to bring to the table with this adaptation.

Wes Ball: The director behind the new Zelda film

Let’s start with some information about the American director Wes Ball, best known for his work on the Maze Runner trilogy. A film trilogy inspired by the book series of the same name by James Dashner, which, more or less, were quite appreciated, especially in terms of how Wes Ball visually maximized the budget. His most important work is indeed the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which will serve as another reboot for the classic Planet of the Apes series, functioning both as a reboot and a sequel to 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. Coming on May 10, 2024, we’ll get a glimpse of what Wes is capable of with a larger budget and a more significant franchise.

The Zelda Live Action – Insights from the director’s interview

In this interview with Total Film, Wes Ball doesn’t hide his desire to create a cinematic adaptation based on the Zelda series, with initial desires dating back to 2010. Wes acknowledges the franchise’s widespread love and wants to do it justice by bringing a film that is serious yet knows how to be fun and extravagant when necessary.

In short, it seems that the director wants to bring a more serious rendition of Hyrule but not take itself too seriously and ultimately aims to entertain and captivate the audience. Probably with its own story leveraging on the different “timelines” with a Link never seen before. Although influences from the most beloved chapters of the series are to be expected, especially from Breath of The Wild and Tears of The Kingdom.

What do fans think of the Zelda Live Action?

The large chunk of gamers targeted by the Zelda film has both hopes and doubts about the adaptation. We’re talking about a distribution with Sony Pictures, as announced by Shigeru Miyamoto on Twitter, and the budget certainly won’t be an issue. The main points of criticism seem to focus on the choice of live-action as an adaptation format. A format that very rarely captures the essence of a film adaptation of a video game franchise. This is due to the dissonance between 2D and 3D, a direction that doesn’t do justice to the series and sometimes even questionable casting choices.

However, we have had some recent live-action adaptations that have been rather well-received in recent years, foremost among them being Jeff Fowler’s adaptations of Sonic The Hedgehog, which were received quite positively, especially after Sonic received a more fitting redesign for SEGA’s mascot. From Nintendo’s characters, we also have Detective Pikachu, which was very successful, with a sequel that was supposed to be released last year and is expected to come out in the near future due to some complications. As well as Werewolves Within, based on the VR game by Ubisoft, with even more future adaptations coming for other video game franchises in live-action such as The Last of Us, Borderlands, and even one on Minecraft.
