11 Bit Studios has admitted to using generative AI in its recently released sci-fi survival game The Alters. The developer has promised to make changes in an upcoming update.

The Alters developer 11 Bit Studios has confirmed it used AI-generated text for a graphics asset and said it used it as a work-in-progress placeholder before release before it was mistakenly left in the game.
Responding to fans who noticed the generative AI content, the developer promised to fix it and other AI-generated translations in a future hotfix.
Why Fans Are Upset About Generative AI in The Alters
11 Bit Studios is not the first game to use generative AI in a game, but after it was spotted last week by eagle-eyed fans, many feel the studio should have disclosed its use.
In a discussion thread on the Steam forums, one user suggested “it should be a bannable offense” to not disclose the use of AI, while another said the developer knew it would “perhaps put a lower number on sales” for the game.
Many people believe that utilizing AI reveals a developer’s priority towards efficiency over authenticity, which places real jobs at risk and diminishes the quality of the gaming experience.
11 Bit Studios’ Response and Promise of Change
In a statement to IGN, 11 Bit Studios acknowledged it should have been more transparent, admitting that “AI-generated assets were used strictly as temporary WIPs during the development process and in a very limited manner.”
The statement continued: “During production, an AI-generated text for a graphic asset, which was meant as a piece of background texture, was used by one of our graphical designers as a placeholder.”
11 Bit Studios attached a screenshot, which it says shows where and how the AI-generated content was used, saying it was only used as a temporary measure due to “time constraints.
In addition, a few movies are available for the Alters to watch in the social area within the game, requiring AI-generated translations, making up “approximately 10k words out of 3.4 million across all languages in the game.” The developer admits this was a mistake and has promised fans to fix it in upcoming hotfixes.
11 Bit Studios reaffirmed its commitment to its fans, stating: “Our team has always prioritized meaningful, handcrafted storytelling as one of the foundations of our game.”
What This Means for The Alters and the Industry
The Alters is just the latest game to receive backlash for its use of AI-generated content. While some acknowledge AI can be a useful tool for developers as they explore new ways to create games, many feel it should not take away work from a human.
AI is still a relatively new tool, and although it is seeing much wider use in all industries, the video game world is yet to fully embrace it as the controversy of how and when it should be used continues to be debated.
Conclusion
The Alters developer 11 Bit Studios has admitted to using AI-generated content and promised fans that it will change it in future updates. What do you think of AI usage in video games? Share your thoughts in the comments.
