Wei Shen fights through the streets of Hong Kong in Sleeping Dogs

The Sleeping Dogs movie adaptation has faced a turbulent development cycle, but the project is finally gaining traction. After years of silence and a canceled iteration involving Donnie Yen, Simu Liu is officially leading the charge to bring Wei Shen to the big screen.

The best news? A director is now attached, and his resume suggests the action will be nothing short of brutal.

Learn more about Simu Liu’s confirmation of the Sleeping Dogs movie in early 2025!

The Sleeping Dogs Movie Production

Square Enix and United Front Games struck gold in 2012 with Sleeping Dogs, an open-world action title set in Hong Kong. Fans have clamored for a live-action adaptation ever since.

Originally announced in 2017 with martial arts legend Donnie Yen cast as Wei Shen, the project stalled. Yen confirmed earlier in 2025 that his version was dead in the water.

However, the franchise didn’t stay down for long. Shang-Chi star Simu Liu revived the project, collaborating directly with Square Enix. Liu plans to both produce and star in the film. A first draft of the script is complete, signaling that this is more than just a rumor.

Director Tjahjanto Joins the Adaptation

The most exciting development is the confirmation of the director. Timo Tjahjanto, the Indonesian filmmaker known for visceral action and horror, has signed on.

Tjahjanto built his reputation with the “Mo Brothers” collective. His solo work includes the relentless Netflix action thriller The Night Comes for Us and Headshot. His style fits the gritty, bone-breaking combat of Sleeping Dogs perfectly.

If you have seen Tjahjanto’s work, you know he doesn’t hold back on violence. This choice suggests the adaptation will lean heavily into the brutal martial arts and environmental takedowns that defined the game.

Verdict: Will the Film Revive Sleeping Dogs?

While the movie is still in early development without a set release date, the talent involved is promising. Simu Liu’s passion for the source material combined with Tjahjanto’s action expertise is a winning formula.

Success in theaters could be the catalyst Square Enix needs to finally greenlight a sequel to the 2012 classic.

Does Timo Tjahjanto’s involvement make you more excited for the film, or are you skeptical after the long delay?
