Skyrim Switch 2 Finally Fixed the Lag, But Now There is a New Problem

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 features improved textures but struggles with framerate consistency 

Bethesda just deployed a critical patch for Skyrim on Nintendo Switch 2, targeting the “unplayable” input lag that plagued the launch. While the update fixes the delay, it inadvertently introduces a new performance headache that leaves the 14-year-old RPG struggling to maintain stability.

Skyrim Switch 2 Lag Fix

The original Switch 2 launch version suffered from a massive 300ms delay between button presses and on-screen actions. This “Kinect-level” lag made combat feel sluggish and unresponsive.

Update 1.7.73.0, released December 19, successfully slashes this latency by nearly 100ms. Digital Foundry confirms controls now feel snappy, aligning more closely with the original Switch version. If you stopped playing because of the floaty aim, it is safe to return.

 

Switch 2 Framerate Issues

Fixing the lag came with a trade-off. Bethesda unlocked the framerate, capping it at 60 FPS. However, the Switch 2 hardware rarely pushes the game that high.

Instead of a smooth 60, players report the game hovers awkwardly between 30 and 34 FPS. This fluctuation causes inconsistent frame pacing, resulting in visible “micro-stuttering.” A locked 30 FPS often feels smoother than a jittery 34 FPS, leading many fans to ask for a performance toggle.

Comparison: Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 manages a stable 40 FPS mode, making Skyrim’s struggle look particularly outdated.

 

Updating Skyrim on Switch 2

If your game hasn’t updated automatically, you might still be playing the broken version. Here is how to force the patch:

  • Highlight Skyrim on the Home Menu.

  • Press the + Button.

  • Select Software Update > Via the Internet.

 

Anniversary Edition Price Analysis

The Anniversary Edition costs a steep $59.99 on the eShop. For a 2011 game with performance issues, this is a hard sell for new players, especially when the Steam version frequently drops to $10.

The Smart Move: If you own the Anniversary Edition on the original Switch, the upgrade to the Switch 2 version is free. You get improved textures, DLSS support, and faster load times without spending a dime.

 

Verdict: Is Skyrim Switch 2 Playable?

If you have the free upgrade, download it now—the visuals rival the PS5 version in some areas. But if you are a new buyer, wait. Paying $60 for a game that runs worse than Cyberpunk 2077 is not “smart shopping.” Bethesda needs to add a “Lock 30 FPS” option before this port earns a recommendation.
