Origin and Concept: Sheep, Terror, and Strategy
Cult of the Lamb was developed by the Australian studio Massive Monster and released in August 2022 for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. The project arose from the desire to combine two opposing gameplay feelings: cute characters and humor with occult themes. You control a lamb that was sacrificed, which was resurrected by The One Who Waits. This mysterious god functions as the superior power and the driving core of the story.
The lamb receives the mission to found a cult and gather new followers. The story serves less as a classic narrative and more as a framework for gameplay systems. The motivation is building power through loyalty, fear, and faith. The game also combines action-roguelike and management simulation. Combat takes place in randomly generated dungeons where every run brings new weapons, abilities, and permanent upgrades. You can also interact with your followers, but more on that in a moment. Exactly this unusual mixture forms the foundation for its later cult status.
Gameplay Loop: Between Dungeons and the Base
The core of Cult of the Lamb is a clear gameplay loop. You constantly switch between action passages and strategic building phases. You perform repeated roguelike runs in so-called Crusades. These take you through procedurally generated areas with changing enemies and events. Each run is divided into short, self-contained sections, so you can always take a short break. During Crusades, you collect resources like gold, bones, and new followers. Additionally, you unlock permanent upgrades and Tarot cards, which can be purchased during runs.
The combat system focuses on fast hack-and-slash gameplay. There are various weapons that vary in range, speed, and special effects. You can expect different enemies and bosses in every run; some story bosses even await you. The boss fights are important milestones and move you forward in the story. After each run, you return to your cult base, and that’s where the management part of the game begins. You build structures like temples, farms, or sleeping quarters for your cult followers.
Your followers must be fed, motivated, and ideologically shaped. In sermons, you strengthen their loyalty and generate important resources with which you can get upgrades for yourself and the village. There are also rituals that give powerful bonuses for a price, though in some cases, a sacrifice must be made. Dissatisfied followers can become sick, die, or rebel, so it is important to always adapt to them or discipline them. The stronger your base is, the better bonuses you get in the dungeon runs. Your cult followers can pray or collect resources for you, allowing you to expand your cult further and further.
Mechanics and Depth: Faith, Control, and Chaos
Cult of the Lamb unfolds its depth primarily in follower management. Each of your followers has their own needs, traits, and loyalty values. They also need food, sleep, and spiritual guidance. If they die, starve, or get sick, it can destabilize the entire cult. You can give your followers specific tasks such as farm work, construction projects, or prayers. Later, you can also send your followers on missions to collect resources, though they can die in the process. If people’s sanity drops, it can lead to refusal to work or open rebellion.
Through doctrines, you can define the cult’s rules of faith and, for example, introduce sacrifices or similar practices. These decisions are permanent and shape the playstyle. Rituals allow for powerful effects like resurrection, mass motivation, or sacrifices. Many rituals have side effects or moral consequences. With faith points, which you get through the prayers of the faithful, you can unlock new buildings, abilities, and rituals.
Post-Launch Updates: From Free Content to DLC
Cult of the Lamb was intensively developed after release. Over time, many free content updates were released, expanding the existing systems. There were also some limited-time events with new rituals like the Blood Moon Festival. Relics of the Old Faith brought a relic system for more build variety. These relics noticeably change runs and increase the strategic challenge. Of course, new bosses and enemies were also added regularly.
Sins of the Flesh changed daily life in the cult by introducing an offspring mechanic for followers. Relationships, aging, and family dynamics became part of the management. This makes the cult feel more alive, but also more unstable. All these updates were simply free. Another highlight that arrived for free over time was the co-op mode. In this mode, two players control the cult simultaneously and go into the dungeon together. The second player then takes on the role of the Goat. Co-op works via local co-op or Remote Play Together. Some small questlines also entered the game as affordable paid DLCs.
On January 22, 2026, the first major DLC Woolhaven will be released, which will also be paid. The DLC is expected to cost €16.99 and brings a new storyline, along with new dungeons that expand the endgame. Another new feature will be livestock and animal husbandry. Added to this are dynamic weather effects that influence the daily life of the cult. Woolhaven marks the transition from pure updates to classic DLC. Players will be able to invest several hours into the new DLC; exact details on the scope are not yet known.
Style, Themes, and Impact: Cute Horror meets Cult Satire
Cult of the Lamb has an extremely high recognition value; the art style is instantly recognizable. The cute, almost childlike characters are often seen combined with morbid content. Violence, death, and occultism are deliberately presented in a playful way, so that it is easily playable for teenagers as well. The game’s humor often arises through exaggeration rather than classic gags. The player acts simultaneously as a savior and a manipulative cult leader. The game invites players to playfully question power structures.
Conclusion: Cult Hit or Short-lived Curiosity?
Cult of the Lamb is more than just a quirky indie idea with sweet visuals. The game combines action-roguelike and cult management so harmoniously that both systems benefit from each other. The fast dungeon runs provide pace, while building and controlling the cult provide long-term motivation. You come for the combat, but stay for the decisions.
Particularly strong is the clear identity of the game. The contrast between the cute art style and dark themes like sacrifice, death, and manipulation does not feel forced, but is consistently pulled through gameplay and tone. Moral questions are handled playfully without providing clear answers, giving the game additional depth.
Cult of the Lamb has also proven to be long-lasting. Free updates have steadily expanded the experience, and with Woolhaven, the next big step is now imminent. The bottom line is an independent indie hit that convinces through style, courage, and systemic depth, going far beyond a mere curiosity.

I really enjoyed this game, its artstyle was charming, had an interesting story and the gameplay fused a simple base management game with rougelite battling. I suggest this game to every rougelite fan because not only is really funny and can provide a lot of hours, but it's also really cheap, definitely a must have. Discord: txcastle
