Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a 2D action game in the style of NES classics. The Ninja Gaiden series has been with us since 1988, and now in 2025 we’re getting a new game in the spirit of the 1980s. The game is being developed by The Game Kitchen, the studio behind the Blasphemous titles. It is published by Dotemu.
This is not a remake or anything similar, but rather a brand-new game. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound tells the story of the ninja Kenji Mozu, who has never appeared in the series before. It’s a story that runs parallel to the original trilogy’s timeline, where you’ll be fighting demons. The title combines classic mechanics with modern elements and is aimed at both long-time fans and newcomers to the genre.

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound will release on July 31, 2025 in digital format for PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series, and Nintendo Switch. A physical edition will follow a few days later on September 12, 2025, but only for the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. There’s also a collector’s edition with a box set, featuring a poster, keychain, medallion, and a CD soundtrack.

In Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, there are two playable characters. First, we have Kenji, who features classic melee combat abilities familiar from many old fighting games. He can punch, jump, and perform combos. The second character is Kumori, an assassin from the Black Spider Clan with ranged attacks, teleportation, and even a demonic form.
The overall controls are very retro-inspired. You’ll perform acrobatic maneuvers both in combat and in platforming sections. Combat allows for varied combo attacks to take down your enemies. The game features boss battles as well as regular enemies. If you explore a bit, you’ll uncover hidden level sections. There’s also a high score system so you can compare your performance with friends and other players.
Thanks to Ninja Fusion, you can unleash powerful abilities to destroy your enemies. The game is purely single-player, so you can’t play as both characters in co-op mode.
Significance for the Franchise
The franchise is truly making a return to its roots in every way. The visual style, the combat mechanics, and the departure from the 3D game timeline all echo the original days. The game was developed as part of Koei’s “Year of the Ninja” initiative. Early critics and players of the demo, which is available for free on Steam, are praising its style, controls, and retro vibes. This title clearly positions itself as a worthy 2D entry alongside the main series.
