Nihon Falcom finally stopped the teasing. After hinting at a new project back in 2024 and missing the 2025 window, they dropped the curtain on Kyoto Xanadu. Missing 2025 was a bold move, as it would have perfectly aligned with the 10th anniversary of Tokyo Xanadu. But the wait seems worth it.
If you played the original, you know the drill: modern urban fantasy meets frantic action RPG combat. But this isn’t just a sequel. It’s a thematic evolution set in an alternate universe where Kyoto remains the capital of Japan. The vibe is darker, the stakes feel more personal.
It is coming to: Nintendo Switch (1 & 2), PS5, and PC via Steam in Summer 2026.

From the Underworld to Hirasaka Academy
The narrative setup here is surprisingly gritty for a Falcom title. We aren’t starting with a generic hero waking up in a village.
The protagonist, Rei Kamiya, is introduced running for his life through the neon-lit pleasure districts of Kyoto. He’s stolen a massive amount of money from the Yakuza for “a certain purpose.”
Things go sideways when he’s pulled into a dimension rift. Just as he’s about to be killed by a monstrosity, he screams for someone important to him. That desperation manifests as light, forming two swords. He survives the encounter only to wake up in an old-fashioned mansion. A masked woman, claiming to be the “Head of the Family,” knows exactly what happened.
She offers him a deal: transfer to Hirasaka Academy. It is a school exclusively for “Qualified Persons” who have awakened to these powers. It’s a classic “deal with the devil” setup that hooks you right away.
The Cast: Not Just Swords
Falcom released the character roster, and it points to a nice variety in combat styles. It looks like we’ll be swapping between characters to handle different enemy types.
This feels similar to the Ys party system or the previous Xanadu game.
- Rei Kamiya (17): The dual-wielder (Uchigatana & Wakizashi). Fast, aggressive, and clearly the DPS focus.
- Fuka Rikudo (17): Rei’s classmate who uses a Naginata. Likely offering reach and crowd control.
- Kazuki Nakiri (18): Brings the heavy hits with a War Axe.
- Sena Nakiri (18): Kazuki’s twin sister. She’s rocking a Mace & Shield, suggesting a tank/stun mechanic rarely seen in speed-focused ARPGs.
- Rurui: The mystery wildcard voiced by Aoi Koga. No weapon details yet, which usually means magic or something story-critical.

The Gameplay Loop: A Spiritual Successor
The developers confirmed the structure will feel like home if you enjoyed Tokyo Xanadu. It operates on a distinct cycle:
- School Life: You attend classes at Hirasaka Academy, managing stats and social connections.
- Free Time: You explore the city of Kyoto. Since this is an alternate timeline capital, expect a mix of traditional architecture and modern tech.
- The Dungeon: You descend into the “Hirasaka” labyrinth beneath the school to battle through the Otherworld.
This “Study, Bond, Fight” rhythm is addictive. It grounds the supernatural elements in a daily routine, making the dungeon crawling feel like a high-stakes job rather than just a grind.
There are still further details to be unveiled—specifically whether the global release will be available this summer or if we’ll have to wait. However, according to Nintendo’s listing page, the presence of both Japanese and English language options might hint at a global release.
Why This Matters for the Genre
Falcom creates some of the best world-building in the industry, but they often get pigeonholed into the Trails or Ys boxes. Kyoto Xanadu is their chance to flex a different muscle—with a layer of moral ambiguity and fast action anime aesthetic.
By skipping the 2025 release to polish this for the Switch 2 launch window, they are signaling that this isn’t a side project. It’s a mainline heavy hitter.
