Intrepid Studios Closing: Ashes of Creation Officially Cancelled
It’s a heartbreaking weekend for MMORPG fans. The ambitious, Kickstarter-funded project that was Ashes of Creation appears to have collapsed completely overnight.
For years, we’ve watched Intrepid Studios build what looked like the next generation of the genre. But now, it seems the servers are shutting down before they ever really opened.
Creative Director Steven Sharif has resigned in protest, citing “unethical” decisions by the board, and the studio is reportedly closing its doors as of Monday.
The Dream Ends in Protest
This isn’t just a delay or a roadmap change; as shared by MMORPG.com it’s an implosion. Steven Sharif, the face of the project and studio co-founder, dropped a bombshell on the official Discord.
He announced he has lost control of the company and is walking away. Sharif didn’t mince words. He stated that the Board of Directors began pushing for actions he “could not ethically agree with.” Rather than lending his name to those decisions, he resigned. Following him out the door was most of the senior leadership team.
It feels like a massive betrayal for the community. Sharif’s passion was the driving force behind this project. Hearing that he was effectively pushed out by corporate maneuvering is a hard reality for anyone who backed this vision.

Mass Layoffs and Unpaid Wages
The situation inside Intrepid Studios sounds dire. Reports indicate that following the leadership exodus, the Board moved immediately to issue WARN Act notices—essentially firing the staff en masse.
According to content creator Theory Forge, who received a copy of the notice, the studio is set to close today, Monday February 2, 2026, at the end of business day
The letter reportedly admits that the studio cannot even meet its recent payroll obligations. This comes right after a smaller round of layoffs earlier this month that affected nine employees. Now, it looks like everyone is out of a job. The developers who poured years into this world are left facing immediate uncertainty without the pay they earned.

Verdict: What About the Backers?
This is the messy reality of Kickstarter development. Ashes of Creation raised nearly $3.3 million from gamers who believed in the pitch. With the studio allegedly closing and payroll failing, the big question now is: where did the money go, and is there any hope for refunds?
If the studio dissolves as predicted, that “refund promise” for a failed launch becomes very shaky. For now, it looks like Ashes of Creation will remain one of the biggest “what ifs” in gaming history.
