Wildlight Entertainment may have shut down after its LinkedIn page and official website went dark. Highguard may be their first and last release.
To no one’s surprise, Wildlight Entertainment, the studio behind Highguard, may have now closed its doors. After a failed launch of its debut game, pulled funding, mass layoffs, and a server shutdown, it wasn’t rocket science to know what was to come next. Studio closure.
Wildlight Entertainment May Be Shutting Down
It’s almost like everything that could go wrong, went wrong with Highguard. The thing is, it’s not an abomination of a game. Really. But how it went about pre-launch and post-launch was, well let’s just say, not in the rulebook of “how to make a successful game.” And mind you, the live-service game arena is already a very very tough place.
Wildlight Entertainment seemed to have the right people behind it. They were former Respawn Entertainment employees who worked on Apex Legends and Titanfall. So they knew what they were doing. The studio was founded in 2021, big reveal in TGA 2025, then released their debut title, Highguard, in early 2026.
That was pretty much the whole marketing (or lack of) strategy for the game. No playtest, no early access, no trailers, nothing. They were riding completely on how the game is. And granted, you can have a great game and make it big. But that’s hard to pull off with a live-service game. Or maybe they took a chance, a big risk, of less promotion as to not overhype and end up like Concord. But they did anyway.
So then fast forward, Tencent pulled its funding and the studio had to layoff the majority of its employees. Before long, the game was shutting down. When this happens, it doesn’t necessarily mean the studio will close. In this case however, it seems to be the case.
No official statement has been issued yet but all details point to that. First reported by MP1st, the studio’s LinkedIn page was removed then its official website was taken down. It’s now only showing a 404 page. Also the remaining staff after the layoffs was to support the game. But with the game already in the vault, there was no reason to continue.
There is no official announcement to the closure but maybe it’s because legally, they are still around. And based on Highguard’s lifetime, Wildlight Entertainment were of few words.
According to Wolf’s Gaming Blog, “Wildlight’s legal entity is registered in Delaware and still appears to be active there, meaning the company technically exists on paper. It has not been dissolved and could be resurrected.” However, it’s a different story in California where it was operating. According to the report, it’s been terminated.
Since they don’t do much press, we’ll see if they ever address this.
