GeniGods: Nezha showing the protagonist facing a colossal deity in a shattered landscape

Black Myth: Wukong proved there is a massive appetite for Chinese mythology, and GeniGods Lab is ready to feed it. The studio has officially announced GeniGods: Nezha, a single-player action RPG that aims to push the genre forward.

Rather than following the standard Soulslike formula, this title blends ancient legends with the martial arts philosophy of Bruce Lee.

Not Just Another Soulslike

The developers describe the combat as “hardcore,” but they have clarified this isn’t strictly a Soulslike. It sits between the demanding precision of Black Myth and the cinematic scale of God of War 3.

You play as the Spirit Pearl, eventually reincarnating as Nezha, on a mission to repair a broken sky and fight back chaos.

The core system relies on a “Be Water” philosophy. Combat focuses on fluidity rather than rote memorization. You flow between ground and aerial attacks, using a “One-Inch Flash” to break armor or a sweeping “Dragon’s Kick” to control crowds.

It feels reactive. The scale matches the ambition, with players climbing colossal gods to fight directly on their bodies.

Unreal Engine 5 & PlayStation Optimization

The technical specs are aggressive. The project runs on Unreal Engine 5.7, utilizing the latest tools to deliver the visuals seen in the reveal. To ensure performance matches fidelity, Genigods Lab is working directly with PlayStation.

The game is optimized for PS5, featuring DualSense haptics, 3D Tempest Audio, and PS5 Pro enhancements at launch. PC gamers will get hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

However, handheld users should temper expectations. Optimization for the Steam Deck is not currently a priority. Don’t expect a seamless open world. The team confirmed a structure similar to God of War, where you unlock a central hub after a specific story quest to access different linear zones.

The Long Road to 2028

The biggest hurdle is the release date. GeniGods: Nezha targets a 2028 launch. The team behind it is roughly 100 people strong, including veterans from the My Hero Academia mobile game.

Shifting from mobile to premium AAA console development is a significant challenge, but the early footage is promising.

Are you willing to wait three years for the next big mythic action RPG?
