Donkey Kong Film Copyright Registered by Nintendo and Universal Pictures

Nintendo, along with Universal Pictures, has registered a copyright for a Donkey Kong film. No further details are known, but a movie featuring the lovable gorilla could launch following the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 and The Legend of Zelda film.

Donkey Kong Film Copyright Registered by Nintendo and Universal Pictures

A Donkey Kong movie could be the next motion picture from Nintendo, as the gaming giant looks to build on its IP following the upcoming launch of Donkey Kong Bananza for the Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17, 2025.

Donkey Kong Bananza is the next major first-party Nintendo title coming to the Switch 2, and it’s expected to send fans bananas after a recent leak revealed a new character and a modest download size of 8.5 GB.

What We Know About the Donkey Kong Movie So Far

The copyright registration is the first and – so far – only confirmation of a Donkey Kong film. Nintendo Studios will once again work with Universal Pictures, which helped produce and distribute the massively successful Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023.

There is no official statement from either Nintendo or Universal. The copyright notice was filed in May this year, which could mean development of the motion picture is already underway.

What This Means for Nintendo’s Cinematic Universe

It’s no secret that Nintendo is looking to expand its IPs beyond gaming, with Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 and a film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda planned for April 2026 and May 2027, respectively.

Nintendo may not stop at Donkey Kong either, as during a recent investor call last month, the company’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, told investors and fans: “Although we cannot discuss our plans beyond The Legend of Zelda movie at this time, we are working on various other projects.”

When to Expect More Information

We may still be a long way off from hearing official Donkey Kong news regarding a movie, as Nintendo focuses on Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 and the Legend of Zelda live-action adaptation.

If we look at the first Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo announced the film in 2019, with production beginning in 2020 for a 2023 release. By looking at previous history, a Donkey Kong film announcement could mean a launch by the end of 2028, a year after The Legend of Zelda.

Conclusion

Nintendo has registered a copyright for a Donkey Kong movie, sending fans bananas ahead of the upcoming Donkey Kong Bananza launch for the Switch 2 on July 17, 2025. Will you be the first in line for a movie? Do you think Nintendo should focus on games? Share your thoughts in the comments.
