Civilization 7 celebrates its first anniversary with major overhauls and a returning fan-favorite leader

Let’s be real: the first year of Civilization 7 has been rough. Since its launch last February, the community has been vocal—and rightly so. The “mixed” Steam reviews tell the story of a game that tried to reinvent the wheel but ended up with a flat tire.

But Firaxis is listening. For the game’s first anniversary, they aren’t just dropping a cake and walking away. They are deploying massive changes that directly address the biggest complaints.

Update 1.3.2: Gilgamesh & The “Quick Fixes”

Before we get to the massive structural changes coming in Spring, Update 1.3.2 is hitting servers right now to stop the bleeding. The headline? Gilgamesh is back, and he’s free for everyone.

Beyond the “Gilbro” memes, this patch is actually about making the game playable without a wiki open on your second monitor. We’re finally getting nested tooltips in the Tech & Civics trees. It sounds minor, but not having to click back and forth five times just to see what a building does is a massive quality-of-life win.

They’ve also added a new Appeal Lens so you can actually see which tiles are “Breathtaking” for that sweet Happiness boost, plus balance tweaks for France, Dai Viet, and the Mughals.

Test of Time: Finally, Play One Civ Forever

This is the big one. The “Test of Time” update (coming this Spring) is effectively rewriting the game’s controversial Age system.

The biggest gripe at launch was being forced to switch Civilizations every era, which killed the immersion of building a singular, eternal empire.

Firaxis is introducing the “Apex Age” mechanic. Here’s how it works:

  • You can now stick with your starting Civ (like Rome) through the entire game.
  • When you play a Civ outside its historical “Apex” (e.g., Rome in the Modern Age), you use a new system called Syncretism.
  • Syncretism lets you “borrow” unique units or tech from other Civs to stay competitive, while keeping your Roman identity and flag.

It’s the best of both worlds: the strategic flexibility of Civilization 7 without the identity crisis.

Victory Overhaul: Goodbye “Legacy Paths”

The other major complaint? Winning felt like being on rails. The “Legacy Paths” were too rigid, forcing you into a specific playstyle early on. Those are gone. They are being replaced by Triumphs.

This new system is way more organic. You can now chase victory through Military, Economy, Culture, or Science dominance at your own pace.

If you’re crushing it, you can even trigger a win condition as early as the Exploration Age. No more hitting “Next Turn” for 200 turns when you’ve clearly already won. It makes the mid-game actually matter.

Verdict: Is It Time to Reinstall?

If you refunded the game or held off buying it last year: Wait for Spring. The Update 1.3.2 is a nice gesture, and Gilgamesh is fun, but the game you likely wanted to play is the one coming with the “Test of Time” update.

That patch seems to be the true “1.0” release that fixes the fundamental design flaws. The “Complete Experience” is finally taking shape.

Are you willing to give Civ 7 a second chance, or did Humankind already steal your heart?
