About Steelrising

Steelrising is an action-adventure role-playing game developed by Spiders a French game studio behind the critically acclaimed Greedfall series, taking place in an alternate history 1789, France where Mesmerism or Animal Magnetism (the study of invisible forces that presided in all living things) was proved to be real, creating a scientific revolution that allowed the Louis XVI to stay in power by creating robot armies suppressing the eventual French revolution, creating a reign of terror never before seen in the country’s history. It falls to Aegis an engineering marvel to take on the king’s army of automatons and change the course of the failed revolution.

• Aegis is an automaton masterpiece created by Vaucanson, a master engineer working in service of the clockwork king, make the most use of your mechanical abilities and become a deadly warrior, dancer, and a virtuoso of elemental arts.
• Fight against other mechanical soldiers that are as complex as they are unforgiving, your nerves and skills will be tested to their limits at every moment as you battle these relentless machines and epic bosses.
• Explore Paris like never before recreated during the times of the revolution, use your energy, flexibility, and tools to navigate the streets, the rooftops, and castles of old Paris, and reveal their hidden secrets.
• While the story is fantastical it is still somewhat rooted in history, filled with mechanical enemies and potential allies that have questionable motives, but ultimately it's up to you to untangle his alternate timeline and make sure the revolution succeeds.

Steelrising Reviews

Steelrising is a new Souls-like twist on the French Revolution that unfortunately doesn’t see all of its lofty ambitions grow into accomplishments. While its gameplay is enjoyable once you get far enough to earn some unlocks and get main character Aegis more decked out, it tries to mimic elements of FromSoftware’s action RPG classics without always understanding what made said elements work. When Spiders leans less on taking inspiration from other games and more on presenting its own ideas, however, we get an intriguing—and surprisingly deep—alternate take on an important moment in France’s history.

While Steelrising has some of the trademark ‘jank’ that is in all Spider games, it is that very thing that makes this developer so special. All their games have something that just feels off (but in a good way), but all of their games I loved more than the next and true to form Steelrising is their best game to date.

Steelrising is easily Spider’s most ambitious work and I can’t applaud them enough for the unique setting and backdrop, even if the core mechanics are what we’ve experienced dozens of times before. There is of course a steep learning curve in the beginning, but anyone with ample Souls experience should feel right at home. Thankfully you don’t have to ‘Git Gud’ to enjoy Steelrising to completion even as a casual fan, as long as you don’t mind disabling achievements.
