Everything except the candy corn zombie heads I could swallow as zombie comfort food. But because it’s trying so hard to be a Metal Gear game, and falling so short, Metal Gear Survive is the wrong kind of off-kilter. Sometimes a Kojima game without Kojima just isn’t a Kojima game. Sometimes it’s just a snack to tide me over. 23 days to go.

Would I recommend buying Metal Gear Survive? Not yet. It’s not awful, but it’s also just so very mediocre that it doesn’t deserve the $40 it’ll cost you. On Steam sale, maybe when it’s $20 and you’re jonesing for a decent single player survival game. Otherwise, you’re better off playing one of the very many other online survival experiences.

Aside from the aggravating always-online infrastructure of the game, Metal Gear Survive is a pretty good outing for those looking for a reason to battle zombies in an extremely vulnerable state. While the story is pretty meh, it is the exploration factor and sense of discovery and accomplishment, as well as feeding those hunger and thirst meters that showcase the fun and enjoyment of this experience.
